10 Essentials for a First Kitchen

Are you, a friend, or a family member moving into your first home or apartment? There’s so much to do and work with, and it’s really important to take some time and put together lists of what it is that you want to get your hands on.

The kitchen is one of the most important parts of your home, and it’s essential to determine what is necessary and how you want to spend your money. Here’s a look at some of the most essential things that you’re going to want to have for your kitchen.

1. Coffee Maker and/or Tea Pot

First thing is first – you need to be sure that you have your coffee or tea readily available. Having a coffee maker and/or tea pot handy is always helpful. They aren’t only used for tea and coffee – you can use them to boil hot water for soup, among other uses.

2. Pots and Pans

If you plan on cooking often, then you want to have a set of pots and pans to use in order to do so. You want pots and pans in various sizes so that you don’t find yourself stuck in a situation where you don’t have enough room to fry, boil, or cook something on your stovetop.

3. Air Fryer

This spot used to be “toaster oven” – but ever since the air fryer hit the scene, many people consider this to be the superior option. Air fryers are able to do everything that toaster ovens can – and more. They cook more quickly, food comes out crisper, and they have tons of applications and recipes you can enjoy.

4. Flour Sack Towels

Flour sack towels are incredibly absorbent, and they are reusable. So, immediately, they’re better than just having a roll of paper towels. If there’s someone in your life who’s just starting out on their cooking journey and needs versatile flour sack towels that can do a bunch of cleaning and displaying jobs, Mary’s Kitchen Towels need to make it into their cabinet.

5. Set of Measuring Cups and Spoons

Unless you’re really good at “eyeballing it,” you are going to want to have a set of measuring cups and a set of measuring spoons at the ready. These make it so much easier to measure – and scoop – whatever ingredients that you’re using for a recipe. You may also want to consider a graduated glass measuring cup for larger portions.

6. (At least) Two Cutting Boards

Don’t cut on your counters! It can cause a lot of damage and it makes it a lot harder for you to keep things clean and safe. Because of that, you need to have cutting boards handy to cut on.

Why do you need more than one? Because it’s a good idea to have one cutting board for meat, and one for everything else. That way, you don’t have to be concerned about cross-contaminants and you can prevent food-borne illness more easily.

7. Silverware

You need something to eat with, of course! A decent set of silverware doesn’t cost a lot of money, so get enough for 4 place settings (or however many people you expect to have at a meal at one time). Make sure that the set has spoons, forks, butter knives, and any other silverware you may need.

8. Glasses and Dishes

Along with silverware, you want to get a nice set of glasses or cups, and a solid set of dishes. Once again, you want to get enough so that you can serve the maximum number of people you regularly expect to eat at your home.

9. A Great Set of Knives

Everyone needs some good knives for food prep. Make sure that they come in several sizes and have different styles of blades. That way, you’re ready for whatever type of meat, vegetable, or other food you want to cook with.

10. Mixing Bowls

Is baking in their future? Even if it’s not, mixing bowls have tons of applications in regards to cooking big meals. Tons of items need to be mixed when you’re cooking. When looking for mixing bowls, try to find a set that has 4 to 5 different sizes that you’ve got one for pretty much any and every purpose you may have.

Put together a list and shop around for what you can find. More often than not, you’ll have a wide array of options and you can work out what it is that makes the most sense for you and your purposes. Put together a checklist and you’ll be sure to be ready to use your new kitchen shortly after you move into your new place.
