It’s one of the most awesome things about being on vacation. By visiting elite destinations and dropping some dollars, you can feel like a somebody – if only for a week.
The French Riviera is one of those places. As a region favored by the rich & famous, this region offers multiple opportunities to become someone else.
But if it’s your first time there, where should you focus your attention? In this blog, we’ll share several can’t-miss spots in this classic travel destination.
Cannes
Once upon a time, Cannes was a fishing village. But starting in the 20th century, its popularity as a summer resort began to rise. Then in 1938, the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival was held.
As the popularity of cinema surged in the 1950s, this event made Cannes famous worldwide. If you want to visit during the film festival, plan your trip for May. But book everything well in advance – you’re not the only stargazer out there!
But even if you can’t (or don’t want to) attend, there’s plenty to do the rest of the year. You can wander the Old Town, check out the Hand Prints of the Stars, or lay on the beach (approximately 30 EUR for a sunbed).
St. Tropez
If you charter a yacht in the French Riviera, there’s no better port to set sail to. That’s because, for years, St. Tropez has been a favored hangout for A-list celebrities, like Leonardo DeCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, and Jay Z/Beyonce.
As you ply the waters of this famed port, there’s no telling who you’ll run into. But when you come ashore, there’s even more to see. From the shops & restaurants of the Vieux Port to its impressive Citadelle (the views are amazing), you’ll enjoy your time in this charming village.
Nice
Seeking something a bit more urban? Then spend significant time in Nice. It’s home to nearly 350,000 people, so it’s not too touristy, but it’s much less hectic than nearby Marseilles.
Relax with a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, then catch some rays on Nice’s pebble beach. And once you’ve worked up an appetite, try out this city’s street food scene. As you do, be sure to try Socca, a delightful fried flatbread made from chickpea flour.
Monaco
Though technically not in France (Monaco is a fully sovereign city-state), Monaco is an unmissable part of the French Riviera. Thanks to favorable tax laws, this place has become a refuge for the wealthy, drawing rich & famous people from around the globe.
But even if you aren’t a millionaire, you can still pretend. Play high stakes games at the Monte Carlo Casino, attend an opera, and if you’re here in late May, watch the Monaco Grand Prix.
Make the Most of Your French Riviera Vacation
Life’s too short to suppress your inner spirit. So even if your everyday budget is modest, why not live life large on vacation? As destinations go, there’s no better place to do this than in the French Riviera.
