Cards get blanked at Brainerd

Mar. 3—BRAINERD — With a five-goal explosion in the second period, the Brainerd/Little Falls girls hockey team pulled away with an 8-0 victory over Willmar at Essentia Health Sports Center.

Willmar is now 4-1-1 in the Central Lakes Conference following Tuesday’s loss. Brainerd/LF is 6-2. River Lakes is 5-3-1 and Alexandria was 4-3.

It was also a matchup of two ranked teams, with the Flyin’ Warriors ranked 10th in Class AA and the Cardinals 10th in Class A.

Macy Peterson and Emma Booth both had two goals for the Flyin’ Warriors.

Five different players — Booth, Peterson, Riah Stroot, Molly Hagelie and Brynne Folden — accounted for Brainerd/Little Falls’ scores in the second.

Willmar plays River Lakes at 7:15 p.m. Saturday in Paynesville.

River Lakes made a late push, but it was not enough to come back against No. 1 Chisago Lakes at Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

The Stars came in ranked ninth in Class A while the Wildcats are the top-ranked team in A.

After a scoreless first, Chisago Lakes got a trio of goals in the second from Dylan Grilz, Sydney Boyle and Jenna Lawry. Then after River Lakes’ Paige Blattner cut the deficit to two with a power-play goal early in the third, Laine DeVries gave the Wildcats some insurance with a score at 3:30.

Sophia Hess and Olivia Haines each had power-play goals in the third for the Stars, with Haines’ goal coming at 15:44. River Lakes had an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal in the final period.

Kaydence Roeske had 26 saves for the Stars while the Wildcats’ Anna Hanson had 31.

River Lakes plays Sartell/Sauk Rapids at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Bernick’s Arena in Sartell.

Maddy Seifert had a hand in all three of Hutchinson’s goals in a Wright County Conference victory against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at Litchfield Civic Arena.

Seifert had an unassisted goal in the first period along with two third-period assists on a pair of scores from Ellie Campbell.

The Dragons’ lone goal came at 15:20 of the third by Cassy Justison, with an assist from Lauren Block. In net, Avery Stiwell had 35 saves.

Litch/D-C’s next game is 3:30 p.m. Saturday against New Ulm in Litchfield.

With five first-period goals, Brainerd emerged out of its Central Lakes Conference game with Willmar with a shutout victory at the Willmar Civic Center.

Carter Springer had 15 saves for the Warriors while Gavin Steinwand stopped 38 of 45 shots for the Cardinals.

Willmar plays Moose Lake-Willow River at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center.

The Fire out-shot Litchfield/D-C, 54-20. Holy Family got a pair of goals from Jake Cameron and single goals from Jacob McPartland and Nick Strand.

Litchfield/D-C (5-6-2) is host to New Prague at 7 p.m. Thursday.
