Eden Valley-Watkins breaks Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s heart again

Mar. 12—BROOTEN — Josh Streit wasn’t about to let an outright Central Minnesota Conference championship slip through Eden Valley-Watkins’ hands.

Streit, a 6-foot-8 forward and North Dakota State commit, scored the Eagles’ last eight points in a 49-48 victory over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Thursday.

EV-W ends the regular season with a 12-1 record in the CMC while BBE is second in the conference at 10-3 with one more game to play.

The Jaguars had an 8-0 run in the first half that put them ahead 16-11. They hung onto that lead for the remainder of the half, bringing a 22-21 lead into the locker room.

During the final 10 minutes, the Eagles tied the game four times, only for the Jaguars to retake the lead. EV-W finally went ahead, 47-46, with 2:22 remaining after Streit converted a three-point play. Then with 1:07 to go, Streit used his reach to get an inbounds pass over a pair of BBE defenders and scored in the paint to make it a 49-46 game.

Streit had 14 of his 22 points in the second half and also had 15 rebounds and four assists.

A Will VanBeck layup with 31 seconds left cut the Jaguars’ deficit to one. Then after Streit was called for traveling, BBE got another shot to take the lead. With six seconds left, Ryan Schwinghammer faked out an EV-W defender in the low post, but it was enough to put Schwinghammer off-balance for the shot to hit the back of the rim.

Leading the Jaguars was Ashton Dingmann with 15 points along with five rebounds and five assists. VanBeck had 13 points and Schwinghammer was also in double figures with 10 points.

It was the second time this season that BBE and EV-W came down to a single point. On Feb. 9 in Eden Valley, the Eagles came away a 62-61 victor.

The Jaguars conclude the regular season Friday at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.
