As President Biden’s nearly $2-trillion Build Back Better plan makes its way through Congress, it has put a renewed focus on a key federal program that awards financial aid to low-income students: the Pell Grant.
The social-spending package would provide a $40-billion investment in higher education and work-force development, including raising the maximum Pell Grant award by $550, to $7,045 a year. The plan would fall short of doubling the maximum award, which many advocates wanted, but it still would allow the largest single-year increase in the maximum award in more than a decade.
