HPCA’s Garrett, Nyok earn top conference honors

Mar. 2—HIGH POINT — High Point Christian’s K.J. Garrett on the boys side and Tiir Nyok on the girls side have been selected basketball conference player of the year by the Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference.

Garrett and Greensboro Day’s Jaydon Young shared the boys award.

HPCA’s Kennedy Powell and Nadiya Hairston were also named to the girls all-conference team, while Westchester Country Day’s Myles Patterson was chosen for the boys all-conference team.

HITOMS SPRING LEAGUE STARTS THIS WEEK

HIGH POINT — Play starts this week in the HiToms spring high school baseball league.

Truist Point, the home of the Rockers, will host three games: today between the High Point Phoenix and the Blue Dogs; Wednesday between the High Point Nighthawks and the Falcons; and Thursday between the High Point HiToms and the Rockies. All three games start at 4:15 p.m.

There will also be a trio of games Saturday at Alan Jay starting at 10 a.m.

Games will continue through March 13.

S. GUILFORD- SW RANDOLPH FOOTBALL CANCELED

GREENSBORO — Southwestern Randolph’s string of canceled football games includes its matchup against Southern Guilford on March 11.

The Storm were scheduled to travel to Southwestern Randolph for a Mid-Piedmont Conference game. But it will not be played due to COVID-19 protocols within the Southwestern Randolph program.

LEDFORD’S ZIMMERMAN TAKES 4TH IN NATIONALS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Dalton Zimmerman took fourth place in the boys 400 meters during the adidas Indoor Nationals at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Finishing first in his group, Zimmerman, a student at Ledford who also runs for the High Point Blaze, posted a time of 48.77, which was a personal record.

HPU WOMEN’S GOLF

GREENSBORO — High Point University women’s golf took third place, winning one of its three matches, during the Aggie Spring Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Forest Oaks Country Club.

The Panthers, playing match play, lost against Central Michigan 3-2 and won against N.C. A&T State 4-1 on Saturday before losing 3-2 against Appalachian State on Sunday.

Sarah Kahn and Samantha Vodry led the way for the Panthers with a pair of 3-0 performances and never trailed in all three matchups on the weekend. Kahn won 3&2 against Central Michigan, 9&8 against N.C. A&T and 1-up on the 19th hole against Appalachian State.

Vodry won 2-up against Central Michigan, 6&4 against N.C. A&T and 5&3 against Appalachian State. High Point’s other two victories over the weekend came from Olivia John and Danielle Suh against North Carolina A&T.

John won her match against N.C. A&T 4&2 while Suh won hers 2&1 win.

The Panthers are back in action in Wilmington for the River Landing Classic on March 8-9.

HPU WOMEN’S SOCCER, CAMPBELL

BUIES CREEK — High Point University scored a goal in each half to beat Campbell 2-0 in Big South Conference women’s soccer Sunday at Campbell.

Lauren Mazich and Salome Prat each scored for the Panthers (3-0 overall, 2-0 conference), while Chloe LeFranc added an assist.

High Point, which scored in the 34th minute by Mazich off a header and in the 46th minute by Prat on a right foot inside the box, got two saves from Morgan Hairston as the Panthers finished with a 10-7 edge in shots.

High Point next plays at home Saturday against UNC Asheville at 4 p.m.

HIGH POINT — High Point University split its final two games against UNCG on Sunday at Truist Point, losing 6-5 before winning the series finale 4-3.

Cameron Irvine and Peyton Carr — who had a double and a stolen base — each had two hits and an RBI for the Panthers in the opener, while Travis Holt had a hit and two RBIs.

Carter Sheppard, pitching 41/3 innings in relief, took the loss as the Spartans scored two runs in the seventh after tallying one in the first and three in the third following High Point scoring twice in the first and once in the fourth, sixth and seventh.

In the second game, Joe Johnson and Blake Sutton each had two hits to lead the Panthers, who broke a 3-3 tie with a single run in the fifth. Johnson and Sutton each had a double, while Sutton had his team’s lone RBI.

Chris Apecechea picked up the win in four innings of relief while CJ Neese got the save with a four-batter, one-walk ninth. High Point scored once in the first and twice in the second before UNCG (5-2) evened it with three in the fourth.

The Panthers (2-4) regained the lead when Sutton took a hit-by-pitch with two outs and the bases loaded.

High Point starts its next series Friday at home against Winthrop at 4 p.m.
