“Normal is so 2019,” declares one of the characters in the upcoming show Hiccups & Hookups and the freshly dropped trailer of the series then goes on to prove it. The 2-minute 30-second video traces the messy, complicated and hilarious family dynamics and the love lives of members of the Rao household. So you have Vasu, a single mother played by a stunning Lara Dutta, who is stepping out for a date after 20 years. You have her brother, Akhil played by Prateik Babbar who lends an impish charm to his character described as the “CEO of flings”. Then, you have Kay (Shinnova), “an unpretentious teen” who has the tendency to walk into unpleasant situations.
The trailer describes the bunch as a “normally weird family” who are “perfectly imperfect”. The trailer shows that the series is a marked departure from the regular families we are used to seeing on screen. Members of the Rao household bust stereotypes by discussing love, sex and relationship complexities like they are chatting about the weather. We get to see a scene where Prateik Babbar’s character helps his sister write her bio on a dating profile. He even jokes that her original bio reads like an FIR. We also have a friend who gives far from perfect dating advice, a pair of disgruntled parents and a host of prospective romantic partners for Vasu, Akhil and Kay.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Lara Dutta said, “As promised, here it is. Trailer me koi filter nahi hai, family me kaise hoga? Ladhai me bhi aur razai me bhi, the Raos are completely unfiltered (There is no filter on the trailer, so how will the family have one? In fights and under the sheets, the Raos are completely unfiltered).”

Prateik Babbar too shared the trailer on social media and wrote, “When it comes to craziness, Rao family me uski na koi seema hai, na koi rekha hai…na aarti hai…na pooja hai. (When it comes to craziness, Rao family has no limits) Oops..did I just start telling you about Akhil Rao’s hookups?”
In addition to Lara Dutta, Prateik Babbar and Shinnova, the series also stars Meera Chopra, Divya Seth Shah and Meiyang Chang in lead roles.

Hiccups & Hookups is directed by Kunal Kohli and will stream on Lionsgate Play from November 26. The series is Lionsgate Play’s first Indian original series and is a remake of American comedy-drama Casual. Casual, which received critical acclaim, ran for four seasons on Hulu.
