Loyola U. Maryland Names New President; Gonzaga U. Provost to Step Down

Terrence M. Sawyer will become president of Loyola U. Maryland

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Michael D. Anthony, vice president for student affairs and institutional effectiveness at Prairie State College, has been named president of the college. He will replace Thomas Saban, who has served as interim president since March 2020.

John Delaney, interim president of Flagler College since July, has been named to the position permanently.

Corey L. McCray, associate vice chancellor for programs at the Virginia Community College System Office, has been named president of Paul D. Camp Community College, in Virginia.

Benjamin E. Rusiloski, interim president, vice president for academic affairs, and dean of the faculty at Delaware Valley University, in Pennsylvania, has been named president on a permanent basis. He succeeds Maria Gallo, who left to become chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.

Terrence M. Sawyer, senior vice president at Loyola University Maryland, has been named president. He will succeed the Rev. Brian F. Linnane, who retired in June.

Michael Sebaaly, head wrestling coach and an instructor of physical education at North Idaho College, has been named interim president. He will replace Richard MacLennan, who was fired in September.

Brad D. Smith, executive chairman of the board and former chief executive of Intuit, has been named president of Marshall University, in West Virginia. He will succeed Jerome Gilbert, who plans to step down.

Cyrus Vatandoost, executive vice president at Nossi College of Art, has been named chief executive and president. He will succeed Nossi Vatandoost, who has served as president since the college’s founding in 1973.

Michael D. Williams, president of Faulkner University, will become president of Harding University in June 2022. He will succeed David B. Burks, who plans to retire.

Resignations
Carlos Clark, president of Arkansas Baptist College, has resigned after a year in the role.

William J. Fritz, president of the City University of New York College of Staten Island since 2014, plans to step down.

Lyle Roelofs, president of Berea College since 2012, will step down June 30, 2023.

Retirements
Thomas J. Gamble, president of Maria College, in New York, will retire in 2022.

Alex Johnson, president of Cuyahoga Community College, will retire in June 2022.

Eduardo Ochoa, president of California State University-Monterey Bay since 2012, plans to retire in June 2022.

Resignations
Deena J. González, provost and senior vice president at Gonzaga University, will step down and return to the faculty and serve as a senior university fellow in August 2022.

Sally McRorie, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Florida State University, will return to the faculty at the end of the year.

Milton Javier Bravo, former associate publisher at Commonweal Magazine, has been named vice president for mission, values, and inclusion at Edgewood College.

Linda Kiraly Gilbert, associate vice president for administration and finance at Widener University, has been named vice president for administration and finance.

John Head, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs at Gordon State College, has been named vice president for enrollment management and student experience at LaGrange College.

Bruce King, associate vice chancellor for racial equity at City Colleges of Chicago, has been named vice president for equity and inclusion at Elmhurst University.

Beth Kramer, vice president for advancement at Olin College of Engineering, has been named vice president for advancement at Simmons College.

Joanne McGurk, interim vice president for academic affairs at Mercyhurst University, has been named to the post permanently.

Anita Oberbauer, a professor of animal science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California at Davis, has been named executive associate dean of the college.

Ryan Riley, special assistant to the president and executive director of government, corporate, and foundation relations at Elizabethtown College, has been named vice president for advancement at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Donald J. Welch, vice president for information technology and chief information officer at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, has been named vice president for information technology and global university chief information officer at New York University.

Amy Wenger, vice chancellor for regional campuses at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, has been named vice chancellor of the university’s Northwest Regional Campus in addition to her current role.

Meredith Whitfield, deputy chief of staff and director of external relations at Western Carolina University, has been named chief of staff to the president at the University of Maine.

Frances Contreras, associate vice chancellor for equity, diversity, and inclusion and a professor of education studies at the University of California at San Diego, will become dean of the School of Education at the University of California at Irvine on January 1.

Mukesh K. Jain, chief academic officer at the University Hospitals health system in Cleveland and vice dean for medical sciences at Case Western Reserve University, has been named dean of medicine and biological sciences at Brown University.

Bridget Niland, director of Project Play Western New York and an associate professor of business administration at Daemen College, has been named dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Niagara University.

Christopher Ocker, former associate director of the Center for Hermeneutical Studies and chair of the department of cultural and historical studies at the Graduate Theological Union, has been named assistant provost of the Graduate School of Theology and interim dean of San Francisco Theological Seminary at the University of Redlands.

Resignations
Bo Fernhall, dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, plans to step down and return to the faculty next year.

Margaret Sova McCabe, dean of the School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, plans to step down and return to the faculty in June 2022.

Sten Vermund, dean of the School of Public Health at Yale University, will step down at the end of June 2022.

Retirements
Doreen C. Harper, dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, plans to retire next year.

Mark Jacobs, dean of the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University, will retire at the end of the academic year.

Barbara Lipinski, provost and chief executive at Antioch University at Santa Barbara, has been named associate vice chancellor for academic personnel at Antioch University.

Donovan Roy, assistant dean of diversity and inclusiveness in the Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine at Western Michigan University, will become vice dean of diversity, equity and inclusion in the School of Medicine at Wayne State University on November 2.

Shavonne Shorter, special assistant to the president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Bloomsburg University, has been named associate provost for equity and inclusion and chief diversity officer at University of Mary Washington.

Debra F. Weinstein, vice president for graduate medical education at the Mass General Brigham health-care system, in Boston, has been named executive vice dean of academic affairs in the Medical School at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and chief academic officer for Michigan Medicine.

Matt Wyszynski, chair of the departments of modern languages and English and acting chair of the department of philosophy at the University of Akron, has been named senior associate dean of the Williams Honors College.

FACULTY
Appointments
danah boyd, a partner researcher at Microsoft Research, has been named a visiting distinguished professor in the Center for Digital Ethics and Tech & Society Initiative at Georgetown University.

Jelani M. Favors, an associate professor of history at Clayton State University and author of Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism, has been named a professor in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University.

Jamey Rootes, former president of the Houston Texans, has been named a visiting professor in the department of kinesiology at Sam Houston State University.

Drew Thompson, an associate professor of contemporary art history and visual culture in the School of Image Arts at Ryerson University, will become an associate professor of visual culture and Black studies at Bard Graduate Center and Bard College on January 1.

Gloria L. Blackwell, executive vice president and chief program officer at the American Association of University Women, has been named chief executive.

Lynn R. Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, has joined the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Christopher Howard, president of Robert Morris University, in Pennsylvania, has been named to the Board of Directors for the higher-education technology company Ellucian.

DEATHS
Nadia Chaudhri, a professor of neuroscience at Concordia University, in Montreal, died of ovarian cancer on October 5. She was 43.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a professor emeritus of psychology and management and founder and co-director of the Quality of Life Research Center at Claremont Graduate University, died on October 20. He was 87. Csikszentmihalyi is best known for his 1990 book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, and his research into the psychological concept.

John Freeman, a professor emeritus of law at the University of South Carolina, died on October 21. He was 76.

Charles A. Girard, a professor emeritus of chemistry at Centre College, died on October 15. He was 89.

Don Shaw, a professor emeritus in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, died on October 19. He was 84. Shaw taught at the school for 46 years.
