CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Deborah Preston, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Raritan Valley Community College, has been named president of Mercer County Community College, in New Jersey. She succeeds Jianping Wang, who plans to retire.

John Selmon, provost and executive vice president at Muskegon Community College, in Michigan, has been named president of the college. He will succeed Dale Nesbary, who retired this year.

Todd Shields, dean of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has been named chancellor of Arkansas State University at Jonesboro.

Resignations
Vann Newkirk, president since February 2021 of Fisk University, in Tennessee, has stepped down.

Retirements
Laura M. Casamento, president since 2016 of Utica University, in New York, plans to retire in July 2023.

William A. Covino, president of California State University at Los Angeles, plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Pamela R. Fox, president of Mary Baldwin University since 2003, plans to retire in June 2023.

H. Jeffrey Rafn, president of Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College since 1997, will retire in July 2023.

Christina Royal, president of Holyoke Community College since 2017, plans to retire in July 2023.

Shivanthi Anandan, vice provost for undergraduate education at Drexel University, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at La Salle University, in Pennsylvania.

David Bogen, vice president for academic affairs and provost at the Maryland Institute College of Art, has been named provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Berklee College of Music.

Susan L. Ganter, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has been named provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Deborah Thomas, a professor and head of the department of oceanography and dean of the Texas A&M College of Geosciences, has been named chief academic officer at Texas A&M University at Galveston.

John Wesley Chandler, a former president of Hamilton College, died on August 5. He was 98.

Frank Drake, a professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics and former dean of natural sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, died on September 2. He was 92.

Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America (2001) who also served as an assistant professor in the health-sciences program at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, died on September 1. She was 81.

Joseph Marvin Higbee, a former president of Utah Valley University, died on August 18. He was 89.

Deborah Nichols, a professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College and president of the Society for American Archaeology, died from cancer on July 27. She was 70.

Edward M. Penson, a former chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, died on July 27. He was 94.

James Turner, founding director of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University, died on August 6. He was 82.
