CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Ben C. Burnett, executive vice president and dean of the School of Education at William Carey University, was named the university’s next president.

Edward Dadez, provost at Saint Leo University, has been named president.

Daisy Gonzales, the deputy chancellor of the California Community Colleges system, was selected as interim chancellor of the system.

George Grant Jr., chancellor of Pennsylvania State University-Berks, has been named president of Saginaw Valley State University.

Mark David Milliron, senior vice president and executive dean of the School of Education at Western Governors University, has been named president of National University, in California.

Lara Moore, vice president of finance and administration, and Richard Chaves, chair of the board of trustees at Eastern Oregon University, have been named interim co-presidents. They replace Tom Insko, who stepped down to become president and chief executive of a wood products company.

Patrick Phillips, provost and senior vice president at the University of Oregon, has been named interim president.

Michael H. Schill, president of the University of Oregon, has been named president of Northwestern University. He will succeed Morton O. Schapiro after the initial president-elect, Rebecca M. Blank, stepped down due to her cancer diagnosis.

Melva K. Williams, chief of staff at the Southern University System, in Louisiana, has been named president of Huston-Tillotson University, in Texas.

Resignations
Damian Fernandez, president of Eckerd College, stepped down Monday after two years on the job. James Annarelli, the vice president for student life and dean of students, has been named interim president.

Tom Insko, who has served as president of Eastern Oregon University since 2015, is leaving at the end of September to become the president and chief-executive officer of Collins, a wood-products company.

Joyce Jacobsen, president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges since 2019, will step down and rejoin the faculty. Mark D. Gearan, who served as president from 1999 to 2017, will return to the post.

Charles Nwankwo, president of Clovis Community College, was placed on administrative leave while an investigation of alleged misconduct continues.

M. Roy Wilson, president of Wayne State University, announced he will step down when his contract ends on July 31, 2023. He has served as president since Aug. 1, 2013.

Retirements
Michael R. Cunningham, chancellor of the National University System and president of National University, in San Diego, since 2013, plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Bonita Jacobs, president of the University of North Georgia since 2013, plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Steven Kaplan, chancellor of the University of New Haven, in Connecticut, plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

Jerry King, president of Trinity Valley Community College, in Texas, plans to retire at the end of the semester.

Paul Genecin, chief executive officer of Yale Health at Yale University, plans to retire in January after more than 30 years at the university.

Lynne Parker, who recently served as deputy U.S. chief technology officer and director of the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office in the White House, will return to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville as associate vice chancellor and director of the new AI Tennessee Initiative.

Ray Martinez III, deputy commissioner for academic affairs and work-force education at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, has been named president and chief executive of the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

DEATHS
Tim Barnett, a professor in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, died on August 12. He was 84.

Susan Whealler Johnston, former president and chief executive of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, died on August 12. Johnston was the association’s first female president and recently stepped down.

Neal Nathanson, a retired professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University, died on August 11. He was 94.
