Mar. 10—Six area basketball players were named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s all-district teams, the association announced Tuesday.
Ledford’s Tyler Partee on the boys side and Oak Grove’s Zaire Jones and Trinity’s Autumn Gentry were named to the District 8 second team. Thomasville’s Shakira Little and Jada Gainey were selected to the girls third team.
Glenn’s Jeremiah Scales was named the District 8 boys third team.
Also, West Forsyth’s Shakira Baskerville, who has signed with High Point University, was selected the District 7 girls player of the year.
HPU’S HORMES EARNS CONFERENCE AWARD
HIGH POINT — High Point University’s Abby Hormes has been named the Big South Conference women’s lacrosse offensive player of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Hormes recorded back-to-back hat tricks to go along with three assists in High Point’s two nonconference matches last week.
On Wednesday, she scored three times, added a pair of assists and won three draw controls in a home setback to nationally ranked Davidson. On Sunday at Vanderbilt, she added another three-goal performance, headlined by her 149th career tally to become HPU’s all-time leading goal scorer.
SOCCER HP CENTRAL, RAGSDALE
HIGH POINT — High Point Central defeated Ragsdale 4-1 in Metro 4A Conference boys soccer Monday at Correll-Morris Field.
Yahir Luciano scored two goals to lead the Bison (3-5-1 overall, 3-3 conference). Thomas Wheatley and Bryan Rivera scored one apiece.
Harry Lawson had two assists while Calvin Biesecker had one.
HP CHRISTIAN, FORSYTH HE
HIGH POINT — High Point Christian defeated the Forsyth Home Educators 4-1 in nonconference girls soccer Monday at West End Park.
Chloe Ausburn, Kaitlyn Vickers, Lauren Austin and Ashley Karpovich each scored for the Cougars (2-1), who outshot FHE 8-5. Anna Wetherington had two assists while Ausburn had one.
Grayson Hepner made four saves in goal.
LEDFORD, EAST DAVIDSON
THOMASVILLE — Ledford shut out East Davidson 4-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys soccer Monday at Brown Middle.
Bryson Sims, Camden Way, Carlos Conteras and Parker Cheek each scored a goal for the Panthers (10-1-1 overall, 7-0-1 CCC), who captured their second straight conference title.
Jose Ontiveros, Joe Lamb, Sims and Contreras each had an assist.
Cooper Reich secured the shutout in goal.
BISHOP McGUINNESS, NCLA
KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness defeated the N.C. Leadership Academy 4-1 in nonconference boys soccer Monday at Bishop.
Oscar Del Rio had two goals to lead the Villains (7-5), while Diego Linares and Michael Herzberger each had one goal. Shea Allen-Bolton, John Herzberger and Ben Ritzel each had an assist.
OAK GROVE, THOMASVILLE
THOMASVILLE — Thomasville scored five second-half goals to beat Oak Grove 6-4 in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys soccer Monday at Thomasville.
Xavier Meija had three goals and one assist to lead the Bulldogs (5-1-3 overall, 4-1-2 CCC), who trailed 3-1 at halftime. Pablo Rodriguez had two goals and one assist, while Abner Batista had one goal and one assist.
Ivan Robles, Joel Diaz and Yahir Silva each had one assist. Brandon Perez made seven saves in goal.
For the Grizzlies (6-5, 4-4), Safin Coogle, Aron Disher, Noah Baab and Tristan Coogle each scored one goal, while Luke Long and Ethan Peterson each had an assist. Aiden Daugherty made seven saves in goal.
WHEATMORE, JORDAN-MATTHEWS
TRINITY — Wheatmore fell 3-0 against Jordan-Matthews in PAC-7 2A boys soccer at Wheatmore.
The Warriors dropped to 5-3-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference.
GLENN, RJ REYNOLDS
KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost 2-1 against R.J. Reynolds in Central Piedmont 4A Conference boys soccer Monday at Glenn.
The Bobcats, who led 1-0 at halftime, dipped to 2-10 overall and 2-7 in the CPC.
BASEBALL HP CHRISTIAN, CANNON
CONCORD — High Point Christian beat Cannon School 7-0 in nonconference baseball Monday at Cannon.
Sam Beck got the win with five strikeouts in two innings, as the Cougars (3-1) had five pitchers combined to allow just two hits.
Noah Hill went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.
LACROSSE GLENN, RJ REYNOLDS
WINSTON-SALEM — Glenn lost 14-1 against R.J. Reynolds in Conference 13 boys lacrosse Monday at Reynolds.
The Bobcats dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
In the girls match, Glenn lost 17-0, falling to 0-9 and 0-9.
HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford lost 17-8 against Page in nonconference boys lacrosse Monday at Southwest.
The Cowboys, who trailed 10-6 at halftime, dipped to 6-5 overall.
Meanwhile, Southwest’s girls won 7-2 against West Stokes in a Conference 11 match at West Stokes. The Cowgirls, who outscored the Wildcats 4-0 in the second half, improved to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
