The Six Best Cities in Europe and the UK for Foodies

We take it for granted, but it’s true: Europe and the UK are foodie paradises. By drawing on the rich traditions of past generations, chefs across the British Isles and The Continent have blessed our cities with fantastic restaurants.

Some of these venues have Michelin Stars, which certify culinary achievement. Below, we’ve highlighted six of the best cities in Europe and the UK for foodies. So, take notes and make your travel plans accordingly. Let’s get started.

Wells, UK – Paradise for Vegans

Not long ago, pickings were slim for vegans. As their meat-eating companions gorged themselves on the finest animal-based dishes, they had to endure uninspired salads. No more – around the UK and Europe, skilled chefs are crafting plant-based masterpieces that even omnivores are raving about.

In the United Kingdom, there is no better place for vegans than Wells.  Of its 126 restaurants, nearly half (or 44%) offered plant-based options on their menu. And no matter what your preferences are, there is plenty of choice in this city. There is a stunning 12 restaurants per 1,000 people – the most by far of any city in the UK.

Chester, UK – An Underrated Spot for Fine Dining

In the UK, London is synonymous with fine food. But this world city isn’t the only place in the country where you’ll find posh meals with ease. On a per-capita basis, Chester, a small historic city just south of Liverpool, has the most Michelin star restaurants in the United Kingdom.

Despite only having a population of around 91,000 people, you’ll find seven Michelin-rated restaurants here. Vegans are well-catered for here as well, with 36% of eateries offering plant-based options.

Lichfield, UK – Amazing Sights, Great Eats

Manchester is a flashy city, but it can lack charm. You won’t have to go far to find it, though – 16 miles to the north, you’ll find the medieval city of Lichfield. With a population of about 32,000, life moves more slowly here.

But after a long day of sightseeing, you’ll work up an appetite. Thankfully, Lichfield has a thriving food scene, as they have over 120 restaurants to choose from. Many of them are fine establishments – two have Michelin Stars. And, with 40% of these establishments having plant-based meals, vegans will feel at home here.

Lisbon, Portugal – Quantity AND Quality

In recent years, Lisboa’s profile has risen. It’s not hard to see why, as its outstanding climate, rich history/culture, and affordable cost of living has garnered it loads of attention. Many have relocated here, as evidenced by the increasing customer base that outfits like CIA Landlord Insurance have been enjoying.

But, there’s another reason why people are flocking to Lisbon – its food scene. With nearly 5,000 restaurants, this city has the most eateries per capita in Europe. And, with the average dish costing about €14, their expense won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Not all is perfect, though – only 12.8% of restaurants have plant-based options. But, on balance, Lisbon is a city that foodies shouldn’t miss.

Paris, France – For Authentic French Cuisine, Go to the Source

Experts regard French food as one of the world’s top cuisines. So, if you want to enjoy the best of the best, why not go to the source? Paris, a city well-loved for its architecture, culture, and cute neighbourhoods, also has loads of top-quality restaurants and cafes.

In total, you’ll find nearly 45,000 establishments within city limits – an overwhelming number. Whilst many traditional restaurants may lag on vegan options, the sheer amount of eateries in Paris guarantees you’ll find many amazing plant-based spots. Watch your wallet, though – the average meal at a mid-range restaurant will set you back about €60!

Florence, Italy – the Best Place to Indulge in Meatless Italian Cuisine

France isn’t the only place to grab a good meal on The Continent – Italian cuisine also ranks highly with foodies. And within Italy, there are few places better than Florence when it comes to quality eats.

Exhibit A: Florence has eight Michelin Star establishments – one of them holds coveted three-star designation. This city is also one of the best places in Europe for vegans – nearly a quarter of all restaurants have plant-based options.

Europe and the UK are Wonderlands for Food Lovers

When it comes to quality restaurants, it’s hard to go wrong in this part of the world. From home-cooked British standards to fine Italian masterpieces, the kitchens of this continent has much to offer foodies.
