Cancun

Situated along the beautiful coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, the resort destination of Cancun needs no introduction to travel buffs. Beaches, vibrant nightlife and plush hotels, Cancun fails to disappoint even the most hardened tourist. That said, on the flip side, the city is readily accessible to recognisable Mayan archaeological sites, lush jungles, beautiful cenotes and impressive caverns which are a delight for the eco-conscious traveller, all for an affordable price which cannot be compared with any other place in the Western Hemisphere.

Chiapas

Sitting on the border next to Guatemala, the Mexican state of Chiapas is full with lush green mountains that are home to dozens of archaeological sites dating back to the Mayan period of 266 BC. Visitors can participate in drinking rituals which were used by the Mayans centuries ago to connect with the underworld. When it comes to outdoor adventure, Chiapas leads the pack with coffee farms snaking across the Soconusco region, a cloud forest in the El Triunfo Biosphere and surfing on the Pacific coast in Puerto Madero.

Cozumel

Better known the world over for its coral reefs and crystal clear waters, Cozumel impresses even the most discerning traveller. Visitors here will always have their hands full with scores of water-based activities from snorkelling, diving, kayaking to deep-sea fishing among others. This tiny 30 mile island on the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula is a popular year round cruise destination and draws tourists in large numbers to explore Cozumel’s natural wonders.

Holbox island

Located just off the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Holbox island is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets. Accessible only by boat, here you will find miles and miles of undeveloped beaches, no paved roads and no cars either, so as to safeguard the pristine habitat of the island. Since it is still raw and laid back it is preferred by visitors looking for some peace on the ground and incredible marine life below the crystal clear Caribbean waters, especially whale sharks which abound here during the migration period. With only around 1000 residents, Holbox island is the perfect relaxing getaway for those seeking a small-town feel.

Mexico City

A perfect place to commence your trip to Mexico.Take a stroll first, to get a feel of this rapidly growing city, which is a blend of the old and the new. Some major attractions here are the Metropolitan Cathedral, Museum of Anthropology and the National Palace. Just outside the city lie the beautiful Xochimilco gardens with its network of canals. For an excellent day trip, the pyramids of the famous Teotihuacan ruins, 50 kms away from Mexico City, are worth a visit.

Oaxaca

From Mexico City you can continue to Oaxaca, a five hours drive, a city known for its stunning colonial architecture, lively art scene and the most exquisite cuisine to be enjoyed in the whole of the country. Oaxaca is also the right place to shop for Mexican handicrafts, sold by the descendents of the Mixtec and Zapotec tribes, famous for their brightly woven blankets and shawls.
