Top-ranked James Madison grinds past William & Mary 38-10

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — Cole Johnson passed for 220 yards with a touchdown, Kaelon Black gained 141 with a score on the ground, and top-ranked James Madison defeated William & Mary 38-10 on Saturday, playing for the first time since March 6.

The Dukes (4-0, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) were forced to suspend football operations for more than two weeks because of positive COVID-19 test results. But they opened Saturday’s game with a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ate up 5:27 of the first quarter. Johnson found Clayton Cheatham from the 6 to get JMU on the board.

James Madison scored the game’s first four touchdowns, adding drives of 80, 11 and 81 yards. William & Mary (1-2, 1-2) didn’t get on the board until Ethan Chang kicked a 29-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Jawon Hamilton scored two rushing TDs for the Dukes, and Ethan Ratke kicked a 42-yard field goal.

With two games left on the schedule, the Dukes now have the four games needed to qualify for the spring FCS playoffs as an at-large team. One more conference win would allow them to qualify for the CAA automatic bid.

JMU dominated time of possession, holding the ball 11 minutes longer than the Tribe while racking up 460 total yards to 187. The Dukes offense was nearly evenly split with 220 passing and 240 on the ground.

Ted Hefter was 13-for-20 passing for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception for William & Mary.
