At least three people are dead and five more have been hospitalized, some with life-threatening injuries, after a shooting at Michigan State University’s East Lansing campus on Monday night. The shooter remained at large and was last seen fleeing the student union on foot, university police said in a briefing late Monday.
Reports of an active shooter began at 8:18 p.m., and police were on the scene near Berkey Hall, a social-science building on campus, within minutes of receiving multiple 911 calls, according to Michigan State interim deputy police chief Chris Rozman. More shots were reported shortly after at the student union.
The incident at Michigan State occurs after a fall semester that saw two high-profile campus shootings. In October, University of Arizona professor Thomas Meixner was shot and killed by a former graduate student. And in November, a University of Virginia student was charged with three counts of second-degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed three and injured two other UVA students on a charter bus returning to the campus, in Charlottesville, Va., from a field trip.
MSU police told people not to come to campus Tuesday. “All campus activities are canceled for 48 hours, including athletics, classes, and all campus-related activities,” the department tweeted. Victims, the department wrote on Twitter, were transported to an area hospital. Several buildings on campus, including the student union, had been cleared by police.
