4 Effective & Natural Mosquito Repellents

Mosquitoes are a nuisance. They start appearing as soon as the weather warms up and quickly re-establish themselves. Interestingly, mosquitoes have very short lifespans. Their entire focus is on reproducing.

That’s also the reason why mosquitoes bite humans. They need the iron and other substances in your blood to reproduce. Unfortunately, it’s when they are biting that they can transmit diseases, and they have the potential to carry many different diseases.

In general, mosquitoes can be kept away with the right repellent. This doesn’t kill the mosquito but it will stop them from biting you. However, if you have a serious problem with mosquitoes or the repellents aren’t helping, you should contact a local and reputable pest control company. They can assess the issue and deal with it effectively.

There are artificial mosquito repellents, but if you prefer to avoid putting chemicals on your skin then you may want to try one of the following four options:

  1. Lemon Eucalyptus

This is usually found as an essential oil and can be located in virtually any store. You can place a few drops in an oil burner and let the aroma feel entranceways. It’s also a good idea to put some drops on a clean rag and leave them at all entranceways to your home or even around an outside entertaining area.

It’s also possible to dilute the oil in water and then spray it on your wrists, it helps to make you less appealing to mosquitoes.

You can also purchase products with lemon eucalyptus oil in them and use these in the same way.

  1. Plants

Another great way to deter mosquitoes is to use plants. There are several options, all of which are known to repel mosquitoes and several other annoying insects, such as flies.

The best options are citronella, lavender, marigold, and even lemongrass. There are others but these are the most effective. It is worth noting that catnip can also work but this may attract all the cats in your vicinity as well.

  1. Soybean & Olive Oil

You don’t want to put these products straight onto your skin as you are likely to attract more harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun and potentially burn your skin.

But, a diluted version or a natural product containing these oils, can be sprayed or rubbed into your skin and offer a surprisingly comprehensive level of protection against mosquitoes.

Don’t forget, this will only last for approximately two hours, you’ll then need to reapply it.

  1. Predators

If you want to eliminate mosquitoes from your home and yard the best approach is to simply use natural predators. There are several possibilities, including bats, frogs, dragonflies, and even fish.

Simply think about the best way to create a habitat that attracts the above. In most cases, it is water-based which also attracts mosquitoes and allows the predators to eat them before they become an issue for you.
