DIY Basic Top Gun Halloween Costume
Boiled down to its essentials, the Top Gun ensemble is simple.
For those who don’t want to get store-bought costume, it’s easy to DIY the Top Gun look. Whether you want to be a legacy character, like Maverick, Goose or Ice Man, or a newer character like Rooster, Phoenix or Hangman, basically all you need is a flight suit. From there, you can dress it up with accessories, patches, fake facial hair and anything else you’d need to make the costume specific to a certain character, but if you walk into a Halloween party with just coveralls, shades and a sneer, people will say, “Hey, Top Gun!”
Top Gun Couples Costume
Penny who?
When you’re talking about a Top Gun couples costume, you’re really talking about Maverick and Goose. Or Maverick and Rooster. Or Goose and Rooster. Come to think of it, maybe you want get your own little Rooster into the mix, and make it a family costume? No matter the combo, you’ll need one thing: more flight suits, in all shapes, sizes and styles.
Of course, if you have to be Penny Benjamin (as played by Jennifer Connelly), just think of an outfit that’s coastal grandmother chic: a nautical blue cable-knit sweater, white pants, low-top sneakers, maybe add a brown moto jacket or bomber jacket on top. But no one will know who you are, because the true romance in Top Gun: Maverick is between Maverick and his students (or himself, or his past).
Top Gun Goose and Rooster Costume
Too soon?
While any cocky trick-or-treater can be a Maverick, it takes extra-special skill to pull off being the ultimate wingman, the Goose to Maverick’s gander. And yet, Goose has so many unforgettable looks. You can go for the flight suit (naturally). If you’re looking for that bit of casual panache, you can go for his Hawaiian shirt. Or, if your pipes are all warmed up to sing “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” there’s always the dress whites. And the angel wings? Too much? (He’s a goose, after all — geese have wings!)
If you like Goose’s style but can’t bear the thought of what happened to him, Rooster is basically Goose 2.0. They have the same penchant for coveralls. They have the same taste in Hawaiian shirts. They both love “Great Balls of Fire.” They even have the same facial hair! If there’s a better father-son costume, I don’t know what it is. (And is there a Carole at home? She can always wear this orange, strapless maxi dress.)
Top Gun Charlie Blackwood (Kelly McGillis) Costume
If you’re a true OG, you know that Charlie is where it’s at.
To pull off this perfect mix of confident, tough and cool, you’ll just need to add a few touches to the classic bomber jacket, like a white blouse and a pencil skirt. A black clutch and black stockings complete the look. As for the jacket itself, they make replicas, but that’ll cost you. You might want to make do with something that approximates the look instead.
Don’t like any of these ideas? Well they beat your last resort: Going shirtless, getting sweaty and playing volleyball or football on the beach.
