How to Deep-Clean your Bathroom in 7 Steps

Because the bathroom is one of the most humid places in your house, mildew, bacteria, and scum can build up quickly – it’s no wonder the bathroom is the one room in the home that people hate cleaning!

Deep-cleaning shouldn’t just happen in spring. In fact, you should deep-clean your bathroom every couple of months.

Of course, you could opt for professional bathroom cleaning, but if you want to do it yourself and don’t know where to start, we’ve compiled a simple guide to streamline the process for you. Following the steps below should cut your bathroom deep-cleaning time to around 30 minutes.

Ready to get stuck in? Let’s go!

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin deep-cleaning the bathroom, you’ll need cleaning supplies. Gathering all your cleaning products and tools before you start will help you get the job done faster because you won’t have to interrupt the process to fetch more supplies.

Gather the products and tools you’ll need and take them into the bathroom with you – a pair of rubber gloves, all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, disinfectant wipes, baking soda, vinegar, rags, a clean sponge, and a broom should be all you need.

2. Begin with the Shower

Aside from the toilet, the shower is the next most unpleasant area in the bathroom to clean. That’s why you should do it first. Fill your bathtub with warm water, soap, and bleach (or your preferred disinfecting agent) and let it soak while you tackle the shower walls and floor.

Once you’ve scrubbed the shower walls and cleaned the drain and floor, tackle the bathtub and let the soap sit on the surfaces for a few minutes before rinsing it off.

3. Clear the Surfaces

Next, clear everything off the surfaces and pack all the clutter away. Put your toiletries in their proper places, unplug any hairdryers or razors, and pack them away into your cabinets.

You can arrange your toiletries neatly in your cupboards after you’ve completed everything else. Organizing your toiletries may not be a priority, so don’t waste time doing this when you could be tackling more important tasks – like scrubbing the sink and toilet.

Once the surfaces are clear of clutter, spray every inch with your disinfectant cleaner. Don’t forget to spray the glass items like mirrors and shower doors with a glass cleaner.

4. Scrub the Sink

Now, it’s time to move on to the sink. Begin by pouring baking soda or vinegar down the drain and flushing it well with hot water. Wipe the sink with disinfectant wipes to kill germs and remove any grime.

Pay special attention to the sink’s drain and tap handles while cleaning. The sink drain and handles are the spots in the bathroom with the most bacteria –so disinfect these areas well.

5. Replace the Towels

Although you should replace your washcloths and towels with clean ones every few days, do it now if they have slipped your mind.

Wash all your towels in the washing machine on a heavy cycle and soak your washcloths in hot water and soap. Hang everything up to dry outside in the fresh air as soon as the cycle is finished to prevent them from molding.

6. Tackle the Toilet

Last but not least, it’s time to tackle the dreaded task of scrubbing and disinfecting the toilet. You can make this task less painful by working as efficiently as possible.

First, put your rubber gloves on so you don’t come into contact with the germs and nastiness lurking in your toilet bowl. Use a microfiber cloth or disposable paper towel to wipe the tank, lid, rim, and flush handle.

Next, wipe behind the toilet and its base – this area is often overlooked during weekly cleaning sessions. Pay special attention to nooks, crannies, and hard-to-reach areas to prevent bacteria buildup. Once you’ve wiped the hard-to-reach areas, move on to the bowl. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and disinfectant, then hang the brush over the rim to dry.

7. Finishing Touches

Congratulations, you’ve almost finished deep-cleaning your bathroom! When everything is scrubbed, disinfected, and sparkling clean, sweep the floor to remove debris. Finally, empty the trashcan and wipe it with a microfiber cloth.

To add finishing touches, you can light a scented candle and put some freshly cut flowers in a vase on the sink.
