HPU’s Horn takes third at NCAAs

Mar. 14—FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — High Point University’s Sydney Horn finished third in the women’s pole vault Friday in the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She posted a school record-setting mark of 4.41m (14-5 1/2 ft).

Horn, a freshman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is the first High Point athlete to place third at an NCAA national championship. The third-place finish earns Horn All-American honors.

She is also the first All-American from the Big South Conference since 2018.

SOCCER, LACROSSE PLAYOFFS SET TO BEGIN

Four area teams made the boys soccer playoffs while two more made the boys lacrosse playoffs that are set to begin this week.

Pairings for soccer are: 2A East — No. 13 Trinity at No. 4 Washington; 2A West — No. 10 Newton-Conover at No. 7 Ledford, No. 15 Thomasville at No. 2 Forest Hills; 3A West — No. 13 AC Reynolds at No. 4 Southwest Guilford.

Pairings for lacrosse are: 1A/2A/3A West — No. 10 Weddington at No. 7 Bishop McGuinness; No. 13 Southwest Guilford at No. 4 Lake Norman Charter.

Lacrosse is scheduled to play Monday and Wednesday this week, Monday and Wednesday next week, and the state championships Saturday, March 27.

Soccer is scheduled to play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this week, Tuesday next week, and the state championships Saturday, March 27.

FOOTBALL BISHOP McGUINNESS, EAST SURRY

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness lost 49-7 against powerhouse East Surry in Northwest 1A Conference football Friday at Bishop.

The Villains, who trailed 21-0 at halftime, dipped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

E. DAVIDSON, C. DAVIDSON

LEXINGTON — East Davidson fell 48-15 against Central Davidson in Central Carolina 2A Conference football at Central.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

OAK GROVE, W. DAVIDSON

MIDWAY — Oak Grove raced past West Davidson 48-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference football Friday at Oak Grove.

Aiden Shewcow ran 15 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns while Seth Blair carried eight times for 131 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies (2-1 overall, 2-0 CCC), who led 35-0 at halftime.

Dylan Barker completed 8 of 12 passes for 103 yards while Crew Jones added a 24-yard touchdown run and Blair had a 19-yard touchdown catch. Shewcow also had a 39-yard catch.

Levi Gates had 10 tackles on defense while James Rosdhal had eight. Hunter Grieser had two sacks, and Gates Cook and Gates each had one. Blair also had a fumble recovery.

THOMASVILLE, S. ROWAN

CHINA GROVE — Thomasville beat South Rowan 36-24 in Central Carolina 2A Conference football Friday at South Rowan.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

GLENN, REAGAN

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn lost against Reagan 31-19 in Central Piedmont 4A Conference football Friday at Glenn.

The Bobcats dipped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the CPC.

RAGSDALE, REIDSVILLE

REIDSVILLE — Ragsdale fell 42-0 against powerhouse Reidsville in nonconference football Friday at Reidsville.

The Tigers dropped to 1-2 overall.

TRINITY, PROVIDENCE GROVE

CLIMAX — Trinity lost 57-0 against Providence Grove in PAC-7 2A football Saturday afternoon at Providence Grove.

The Bulldogs, who trailed 41-0 at halftime, dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

BASEBALL HP CHRISTIAN, ARENDELL PARROTT

KINSTON — High Point Christian split a doubleheader against Arendell Parrott Academy, winning 14-2 and losing 4-1, in nonconference baseball Friday in Kinston.

Eli Crump allowed just two hits while striking out nine in six innings in game 1.

Jake Dunlap, Cosie Pagano and Sam Sapp each had three hits, with Pagano and Sapp each driving in a run. Mitch Adams, Noah Hill and Bryson King each had two hits, with Adams driving in three and Hill and King each driving in two.

Dunlap, Pagano, Adams and Hill each had a double to highlight the afternoon.

The Cougars moved to 4-2 overall.

SOFTBALL HP CHRISTIAN, ARENDELL PARROTT

KINSTON — High Point Christian lost both games of a doubleheader, 8-3 and 3-1, against Arendell Parrott Academy in nonconference softball Friday in Kinston.

The Cougars, who were highlighted by a leadoff home run by Maci Burkhart to start the second game, dipped to 1-2 overall.

SOCCER HP CHRISTIAN, SOUTHLAKE CHRISTIAN

HUNTERSVILLE — High Point Christian rolled past SouthLake Christian 7-0 in nonconference girls soccer Friday at SouthLake.

Lauren Austin scored three goals while Chloe Ausburn scored two to lead the Cougars (3-1), who outshot SouthLake 13-0 for the match. Kaitlyn Vickers and Anna Wetherington also had a goal each. Ausburn had three assists while Grayson Hepner had two.

Cameron Martin and Hepner combined for the win in goal.

HIGH POINT — High Point University lost 3-1 against Radford in Big South Conference baseball Friday at Williard Stadium.

Ryan Russell and Cole Singsank each doubled for the Panthers, who had six players with one hit each. High Point, down 3-0 in the seventh, scored its run when Russell scored from third as Singsank was caught trying to steal second base.

Grey Lyttle took the loss in seven innings for High Point (5-5 overall, 3-1 conference), striking out eight while allowing five hits and one walk.

Connor Bagnieski had three hits and an RBI for Radford (5-7, 1-3), which scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Derek Domecq got the win in one-plus innings of relief.
