Appointments
Kay Faulconer Boger, former acting vice president for instruction at the San Diego College of Continuing Education, has been named interim president.
Pamela Chally, a former dean of the Brooks College of Health and interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Florida, has been named interim president. She will succeed David Szymanski, who will step down to become chief executive and executive director of UNF MedNexus.
Elizabeth Chilton, provost and executive vice president at the Washington State University system, has been named chancellor of Washington State University at Pullman.
Cathy Cox, former secretary of state in Georgia and a former dean of the Mercer University School of Law, has been named president of George College & State University. She will succeed Steve Dorman, who will step down in September.
Jane Fernandes, president of Guilford College, became president of Antioch College on August 16. She is the second woman to serve as president of the college and succeeds Tom Manley, who retired.
Mark Fuller, interim chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth since January, has been named to the post permanently.
Michael Gavin, vice president for learning at Anne Arundel Community College, in Maryland, has been named president of Delta College, in Michigan.
Bashar Hanna, president of Bloomsburg University and interim president of Lock Haven University, has been named interim president of Mansfield University. The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education plans to integrate all three institutions into a single university.
Roger Hughes, head football coach at Stetson University, has been named president of Doane University. He succeeds Jacquie Carter.
David L. Kaufman, interim president of Capital University since June 2020, has been named to the post permanently.
Candice McQueen, chief executive of the National Institute of Excellence in Teaching and former education commissioner for the state of Tennessee, has been named president of Lipscomb University. She will be the first woman to lead the university, where she used to be senior vice president and dean of the College of Education.
Orinthia T. Montague, president of Tompkins Cortland Community College, in New York, has been named president of Volunteer State Community College.
Charlotte P. Morris, interim president of Tuskegee University since Lily McNair stepped down, became its second female president on August 1.
Charles Robinson, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, has been named interim chancellor. He succeeds Bill Kincaid, who was named acting chancellor after Joe Steinmetz resigned.
Michael J. Sosulski, provost at Wofford College, in South Carolina, has been named president of Washington College, in Maryland. He will succeed Wayne Powell, who has served as interim president since last year.
Kevin Weinman, chief financial and administrative officer at Amherst College, has been named president of Marist College. He will succeed Dennis Murray, who was named interim president after David Yellen stepped down.
Resignations
Antoine M. Garibaldi, president of the University of Detroit Mercy since 2011, will step down in June 2022 and, after a sabbatical, return to the faculty.
Richard V. Homan, president and provost of Eastern Virginia Medical School, has stepped down.
Nicole Pride, president of West Virginia State University for less than a year, has resigned.
Carol Quillen, president of Davidson College, plans to step down at the end of the 2021-22 academic year.
Retirements
Greg Gillespie, chancellor since 2014 of the Ventura County Community College District, in California, will retire at the end of June 2022.
Jean Goodnow, president of Delta College since 2005, planned to retire at the end of August.
Nasser H. Paydar, chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and executive vice president for Indiana University since 2015, plans to retire next year.

Heather Hulburt Norris, interim provost and executive vice chancellor at Appalachian State University since February 2020, has been named to the post permanently.
Cynthia Russell, interim vice chancellor for academic, faculty, and student affairs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center since December 2020, has been named to the post permanently.
Pamela Scott-Johnson, dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at California State University at Los Angeles, has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Monmouth University.
Hongtao Yu, dean of the School of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences at Morgan State University, in Maryland, was slated to become provost and senior vice president for academic affairs on September 1.

DEATHS
Stanley Aronowitz, a social theorist and professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center, died on August 16. He was 88. Aronowitz wrote several books, including False Promises: The Shaping of American Working-Class Consciousness (1973) and Against Schooling: For an Education That Matters (2008).
Theodore C. Bestor, a professor of anthropology at Harvard University, died of cancer on July 1. He was 69.
Floyd Boschee, a professor emeritus at the University of South Dakota, died of Covid-19 on August 12. He was 86.
Paul Errol Bragdon, the longest-serving president of Reed College, died on August 7. He was 94. Bragdon led the college from 1971 to 1988.
Paula Caplan, a feminist psychologist and a professor at many institutions, died on July 21. She was 74. Caplan taught at the University of Toronto, American University, the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, and Harvard University.
Henry Givens Jr., president emeritus of Harris-Stowe State University, died on July 20. He served as president from 1979 to 2011.
Barbara Kannapell, an adjunct professor at Gallaudet University and a deaf activist known for her advocacy of American Sign Language as a legitimate language, died on August 11. She was 83.
Jane Leach, dean of nursing at Collin College, died of complications from Covid-19 on August 11. She was 61.
James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me (1995) and a visiting professor at the Catholic University of America, died on August 19. He was 79. Loewen began his career as a professor of sociology at Tougaloo College and later moved to the University of Vermont.
John Peacock, an offensive-line coach for the football team at Western Carolina University, died of Covid-19 on August 18. He was 32.
Charles J. Ping, president of Ohio University from 1975 to 1994, died on July 27. He was 91.
Mike Rose, an education research professor in the School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, died on August 15. He was 77.
Hugo Sonnenschein, president of the University of Chicago from 1993 to 2000, died on July 15. He was 80.
