Mitchell completes three-game baseball sweep of Nichols

Mar. 15—NEW LONDON — Mitchell College overcame an early six-run deficit to defeat Nichols College 18-9 on Sunday, completing a three-game weekend baseball sweep.
Montville’s Jeremy Sagun had four hits and drove in four runs for the Mariners (5-1), who swept a doubleheader from the Bison (0-3) on Saturday, while John-John Jose was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and five RBI.
Camren Varney earned the win for Mitchell with 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
New London’s Jeremy Santos added a two-run single for the Mariners while Jose had a bases-clearing triple and Montville’s Dougie DelaCruz and Steve Cochrane each had two-run singles in an eight-run eighth that broke the game open.
Men’s hockey
— Six different players scored goals as fifth-seeded Providence College routed No. 4 UConn 6-1 in the Hockey East quarterfinals in Storrs. Jachym Kondelik scored his fourth goal of the season in the second period for the Huskies, who finish 10-11-2, while goalie Tomas Vomacka stopped 37 shots. The Friars, 11-8-5, will visit No. 3 UMass in Wednesday’s semifinals.
— Freshman Jake Vaughan scored his first two collegiate goals and added an assist during Conn College’s 7-1 win over Becker on Saturday night in Worcester, Mass. Eric Fournier added a pair of power play goals for the Camels, who finished their abbreviated season 3-0-1, while senior captains Brett Stirling and Matt Creamer had three assists apiece in the final games and freshman goalie Stedheim made 27 saves.
Men’s basketball
— Sarah Lawrence completed a weekend sweep with a 57-49 victory over Connecticut College in Bronxville, N.Y. Sarah Lawrence also beat the Camels (1-4) on Saturday, 66-52. Jarron Flynn had 10 points and five steals for Conn in Sunday’s loss while David Murray added nine points and eight rebounds. Omar Jamaleddine scored his 1,000th career point for the Gryphons in Saturday’s win while Jeff Allen had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Camels, Flynn had 14 points and Ben Rice nine rebounds.
Women’s hockey
— Freshman Casey Godfrey scored her first career goal as Conn College improved to 3-0 with a 4-0 win over Salve Regina on Saturday at Dayton Arena. Senior Erin Dillon added a shorthanded goal for the Camels while Natalie Witkowski and Melanie Conca each added a goal and goalies Abby Wieczorek and MJ Peters combined for 19 saves to earn the shutout.
H.S. girls’ fencing
— Griswold defeated New London 6-3 in an ECC foil match on Saturday. Shannon Anderson and Skylar Dodge combined to go 6-0 for the Wolverines.
