Images of the next-generation Mahindra Scorpio prototype have surfaced online, giving us a closer look at the SUV. The test mule in the photos appears to be nearing the production stage as it is seen with production parts like the double-barrel headlamps, the 7-slot grille, muscular front bumper and 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. In fact, the model in the photos could be the top-spec variant of the new-gen Scorpio. We also get a glimpse of rear disc brakes, which will possibly come as a standard fitment similar to some of the other Mahindra models like the XUV300 and Marazzo.

The new Mahindra Scorpio will come with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and all 4 disc brakes

Mahindra had previously confirmed to carandbike that the new-gen Scorpio and XUV500 will be launched during the 2021-22 financial year, and the new Scorpio will be the first to arrive. The SUV is built on the company’s new ladder-on-frame chassis which also underpins the new-gen Thar. This also means that the new Mahindra Scorpio will likely be longer, wider and taller, and possibly even come with a longer wheelbase as well, offering more space inside the cabin.

While we do not get to see the interior in these photos, the cabin of the new Scorpio is expected to be well-equipped and more upmarket. The SUV is likely to offer a good fit and finish with a host of modern creature comforts, along with new seats and upholstery. It’s also possible Mahindra might only offer forward-facing seats for all three rows this time, with premium interior trim, a new touchscreen infotainment system, a new multi-functional steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, rear AC vents, and more. The SUV could also get a sunroof, as previous spy shots revealed the provision for one.

The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be powered by the company’s latest 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine that debuted on the Thar earlier in 2020, and it can produce 150 bhp and up to 320 Nm of peak torque. It will also get the updated BS6 compliant 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that develops 130 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. The new version is likely to come with a 6-speed manual and an optional 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit.
