The new Yamaha R/World teaser may be confirming the upcoming YZF-R7

Yamaha Europe has released a new teaser video on its YouTube channel that could just be the first hint at the rumoured Yamaha YZF-R7 supersport. Rumours about the R7 name being introduced have been doing the rounds for sometime now. And with Yamaha discontinuing the sale of the YZF-R6 as a road-going machine, there’s significant gap in the product line-up, particularly in markets like Europe and the US, where the R6 still has a strong fan following. With recent documents filed with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) revealing the R7 name, it was only to be a matter of time when more evidence of the new model surfaces.

The new teaser video though doesn’t mention anything about the R7, or even show a motorcycle of any type. But there seem to be some indication from the video of the type of motorcycle that is being promoted in the teaser. The video open with a bird’s eye view of a racetrack, and then goes on to show us point of view footage of a rider on a sportbike, sweeping through bends and taking on sharp corners, hitting the apex. Then halfway through the video, the visuals switch to the road, showing a twisty mountain road, indicating that it could be a practical sport bike.

Towards the end of the video, we can hear the sound of an engine in the background, being revved as the point of view shows the twisty road. If you listen very carefully, the engine doesn’t quite sound like an inline-four, but could be a parallel-twin, like the 689 cc CP2 engine of the MT-07 that the new R7 could be based on. Either way, all this is conjecture at this stage, and more teaser videos are likely to follow soon. Either way, the new R7 may not even make it to India, if it’s even introduced. And even if India Yamaha intends to launch it, it will be something which has no clear rival at the moment, except for the Honda CBR650R and the soon-to-be launched Aprilia RS660.
