Feb. 27—HIGH POINT — High Point University continued its strong start, beating Radford 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 on Friday afternoon and 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 on Thursday in Big South Conference volleyball in the Millis Center.
Madison Smith had 17 kills Friday to lead the Panthers (6-0 overall, 6-0 conference), who have not dropped a set since their opening match Feb. 4 against Presbyterian. Maria Miggins had 21 assists while Mackenzi Thornburg had 18. Abby Bottomley had 18 digs.
In Thursday’s match, High Point quickly took control, building double-digit leads in each of the first two sets before finishing off the sweep. It again led by double digits in the first set Friday, but trailed late in the second before rallying to win and steadily finished off another sweep in the third set.
The Panthers travel to USC Upstate on Thursday and Friday before returning home March 11-12 against Winthrop.
BASKETBALL WHEATMORE, RANDLEMAN
RANDLEMAN — Fifth-seeded Randleman defeated 13th-seeded Wheatmore 66-41 on Thursday at Randleman in the second round of the NCHSAA 2A East girls basketball playoffs.
The Warriors, who rallied over the last half of the season to make the condensed playoffs, finished with an 11-4 record.
Randleman (12-3), the PAC-7 champion and winner of two of the three meetings against Wheatmore, will next face ninth-seeded Farmville Central, which has reached the state finals the last two years and took home the co-championship last year, in the regional semifinal.

The season opener for High Point Central and Southwest Guilford scheduled for Friday will be played Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Southwest due to the weather.

SILER CITY — T.W. Andrews defeated Jordan-Matthews 34-26 in PAC-7 2A football Thursday at Jordan-Matthews.
The Red Raiders (1-0) will be the visitors next week against High Point Central at A.J. Simeon Stadium.

DANBURY — Bishop McGuinness lost 24-6 against North Stokes in nonconference football Thursday at North Stokes.
The Villains (0-1) play next week at Community School of Davidson.

TYRO — East Davidson topped West Davidson 9-0 in nonconference football Thursday at West.
The Golden Eagles (1-0), who will host the Dragons again April 2 in Central Carolina 2A Conference play, will play next week at home against South Rowan to start CCC play.
GLENN, EAST FORSYTH
KERNERSVILLE — Glenn defeated crosstown rival East Forsyth 18-0 in nonconference football Thursday at Glenn.
It was the first game since 2009 that East, the two-time defending state champion, did not score.
Devonte Lyerly ran for 91 yards while Camden Coleman scored two touchdowns to lead the Bobcats (1-0), who scored once in the first quarter and twice in the third.
Glenn, which will travel to East on April 9 in Central Piedmont 4A Conference play, will play next week at Parkland.
LEDFORD, GRAHAM
GRAHAM — Ledford raced past Graham 61-6 in nonconference football against Graham on Thursday at Graham.
Nathan Carr completed 11 of 15 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns while Christian Franklin ran for 99 yards and four touchdowns, plus totaled 57 yards receiving, to lead the Panthers (1-0).
Ledford hosts West Davidson next week to start Central Carolina 2A Conference play.
OAK GROVE, WEST FORSYTH
CLEMMONS — Oak Grove lost 44-21 against West Forsyth in nonconference football Thursday at West Forsyth.
The Grizzlies will play next week at Salisbury to start Central Carolina 2A Conference play.

JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale lost 42-14 against Davie County in nonconference football Friday at Ragsdale’s Kenneth T. Miller Stadium.
The Tigers will play next week at rival Southwest Guilford.

GREENSBORO — Southern Guilford scored 14 second-half points to overtake Western Guilford 22-12 in nonconference football Thursday at Southern’s C.K. Siler Stadium.

Yahir Maldonado scored the game-winner for the Bison (2-3-1 overall, 2-1 conference), while Bennie Hernandez also had a goal.

THOMASVILLE — Steven Joya scored two goals to help lead Ledford past Thomasville in overtime Thursday in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys soccer at Thomasville.

RANDLEMAN — Wheatmore defeated Randleman 4-2 in overtime Thursday in PAC-7 2A boys soccer Thursday at Randleman.
Henry Santos, Yoni Mora, Jagur Williams and Collin Burgess each had a goal for the Warriors (3-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 conference), who were tied 1-1 at halftime. Ryan Baynard had three assists while Williams had one.
Austin Poplin made eight saves in goal for Wheatmore, which hosts rival Trinity tonight.
LACROSSE BISHOP McGUINNESS, ATKINS
KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness crushed Atkins 20-2 in Conference 14 boys lacrosse Thursday at Bishop.
Frankie Centrone had nine goals and five assists to lead the Villains (7-1 overall, 6-1 conference). JT Hanson, Andrew Gaylord and Miles Fuehler each added two goals, while Adam Branch, Alex Harmening, Justin Ehming, Rio O’Hale and Tanner Cave each had one goal.
Ehming had two assists, while Branch and Gaylord each had two.
In the girls match, Bishop won 7-6. Anna Krawczyk and Addison Vitoal each scored two goals (4-2), while Gloria Culler, Katie Dasher and Emma Latham each scored one. Charlee Hemby got the win in goal.
SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, NORTH DAVIDSON
WELCOME — Southwest Guilford lost 11-6 against North Davidson in Conference 14 boys lacrosse Thursday at North.
The Cowboys dipped to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
In the girls game, Southwest lost 11-6. The match was tied 4-4 at halftime before North outscored the Cowgirls 7-2 in the second half.
Southwest dipped to 1-6 overall and and 1-4 in the Conference 11.
GLENN, DAVIE CO.
MOCKSVILLE — Glenn lost 9-6 against Davie County in Conference 10 girls lacrosse Thursday at Davie.
The Ladycats dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
In the boys match Wednesday, Glenn lost 13-5. The Bobcats dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-7 in the Conference 13.
WRIGHT EARNS FIRST-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
High Point University’s John-Michael Wright was selected Big South Conference first-team all-conference, the league announced in its men’s basketball season awards Friday.
Ahmil Flowers was also named to the all-freshman team.
Wright, a sophomore guard, ranks second in the conference with 20.8 points per game and currently ranks 14th in the nation in scoring average.
Flowers, who played at Grimsley, has started every game this season. He is third on the team in scoring with 8.5 ppg and has finished in double digits in eight out of 22 games.
Winthrop’s Chandler Vaudrin was named player of the year, Presbyterian’s Rayshon Harrison was selected freshman of the year, Charleston Southern’s Phlandrous Fleming Jr. was chosen the defensive player of the year, Winthrop’s Pat Kelsey was named the coach of the year and USC Upstate’s Nevin Zink is the scholar-athlete of the year.
JAKOBS NAMED SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF YEAR
High Point University’s Franzi Jakobs has been voted the Big South Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Friday.
Jakobs is a 3.87 student in biochemistry and is High Point’s first winner of the award since 2018. She has run in two indoor meets this season, twice posting top-five finishes in the 800m.
Jakobs, who won the conference’s indoor mile last year, finished third in the 800m (2:19.50) at the Liberty Elite on Jan. 23. She also finished fifth (2:19.58) in the 800m at the Brant Tolsma Invitational.
High Point’s Chris Van Niekerk was also selected to the conference men’s all-academic team.
HPU BASEBALL BUMPED TO SUNDAY
HIGH POINT — High Point University’s series opener against UNCG scheduled for Friday afternoon at Truist Point has been bumped to Sunday as part of a doubleheader. That time has not been set yet.
Today’s game is still scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
EINSTEIN NAMED GOLFER OF WEEK
High Point University’s Brandon Einstein was selected the Big South Conference men’s golfer of the week, the conference announced Thursday.
Einstein, a redshirt-sophomore who played at Forsyth Country Day, was co-medalist at the Pinnacle Bank Intercollegiate with a 4-under 212 (70-70-72). He recorded 12 birdies in the event, tied for the fifth-most in the field, and is now just the fifth golfer in High Point history to win multiple events in the same season.
FAYETTEVILLE — Davidson-Davie Community College lost 97-80 against Fayetteville Tech in men’s basketball Wednesday in Fayetteville.
Na’Zae Baltimore scored 14 points to lead the Storm (8-2 overall, 7-1 conference), who trailed 52-32 at halftime. JJ Williams and Aaron Ross each added 12 points.
DDCC shot 42% from the field for the game, including 7 of 29 from 3-point range, while Fayetteville Tech shot 51%, including 12 of 26 from 3.
The Storm play again Monday at home against GTCC.
