Sensex Rallies 610 Points, Nifty Settles Above 15,300 For First Time Led By Banks

The Indian equity benchmarks clocked yet another session of record highs on Monday on the back of strong December quarter earnings reported by Indian companies. Indian companies reported a near 49 per cent year-on-year growth in December-quarter profits, the biggest increase in four quarters, Refinitiv data for 220 companies with at least $500 million in market value showed. The Sensex rose as much as 692 points to hit record high of 52,235.97 and Nifty 50 index surpassed above its important psychological level of 15,300 for the first time.

The Sensex surged 610 points or 1.18 per cent to close at an all-time high of 52,154 and Nifty 50 index climbed 1 per cent or 151 points to settle at 15,315.

Strong corporate earnings have ignited hopes of faster economic recovery while buoyant global markets also aided risk sentiment, analysts said.

Banking and financial services shares powered the rally in Monday’s session on Dalal Street as Nifty Bank index rose over 3 per cent to hit record high of 37,449.90. Since the start of this month Nifty Bank index has rallied a whopping 23 per cent in a matter of fifteen days.

Nifty Financial Services, Private Bank, PSU Bank and Realty indexes also rose between 1.5-3 per cent.

On the other hand, IT, metal and pharma indexes ended marginally lower.

Mid- and small-cap shares ended mixed as Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 1.31 per cent while Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 0.4 per cent.

Axis Bank was top Nifty gainer, the stock rose 6.2 per cent to close at Rs 797. ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, HDFC, Shree Cements, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Motors, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Adani Ports also rose between 2-4.2 per cent.

On the flipside, SBI Life, HDFC Life, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Tata Steel, TCS, Coal India, Hindustan Unilever, Indian Oil, Asian Paints and Tech Mahindra were among the losers.

The overall market breadth was negative as 1,672 shares ended lower while 1,367 closed higher on the BSE.
