Volvo has unveiled the C40 recharge which is basically a coupe-version of the XC40 recharge EV. The XC40 recharge interestingly is the electric version of Volvo’s most popular SUV and on the C40 recharge, the Swedish manufacturer is using the same battery pack as the XC40 recharge. Volvo has no intentions of making an internal combustion engine variant of this coupe.

“The C40 Recharge represents the future of Volvo and shows where we are going,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer. “It is fully electric, offered online only with a convenient care package and will be available for quick delivery. Getting a new Volvo was never this attractive,” he adds.

The C40 recharge will go on sale around early-2022 in the US and Europe. It has a length of 4430 mm and a width of 2040 mm which is the same as the XC40, though the C40 is shorter at 1580 mm making it more compact and aerodynamic. The main change here is only the coupe-style swoop on the top of the vehicle.

Volvo states that the car has a trunk space of 413 litres, and a frunk which also has 31 litres of storage space – which is another metric that’s identical to the XC40 recharge. Volvo says that it will be offered in an assortment of trims and colours though leather upholstery will not be offered as an option.

The C40 recharge will be positioned below the XC40 Recharge

Volvo claims the 78 kWh battery pack delivers 408 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque and the driving range has been rated at 418 kilometres rated by WLTP. It also supports 150 kW DC fast charging which can charge the car to 80 per cent in 40 minutes.

The C40 recharge will do battle against the Tesla Model 3, the Ford Mustang Mach E, the Audio Q4 e-Tron, and the Volkswagen ID.4 in the US. In the Volvo portfolio, it will be positioned below the XC40 recharge and is a part of Volvo’s strategy of focusing on just EVs by 2030.
