What Kids’ Movies Are You Loving These Days?

Apollo 10 1/2

This weekend, Toby, Anton and I are going to see…

Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood, the new animated film written and directed by Richard Linklater (of Before Midnight, Boyhood, and Dazed and Confused fame). Set in 1969, the story follows a young boy in Houston, Texas, as he gets swept up in the first moon landing. The NASA guys’ expressions in the trailer make me laugh, and I can’t wait to see the whole film.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s coming-of-age tale Turning Red stars Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl, who finds herself turning into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited or upset. Director Domee Shi — the genius behind the 8-minute film Bao — says she wanted to showcase a girl’s puberty experience, which was a challenge since no woman had ever had a solo directing credit on a Pixar feature before. “How do I sell this and get old white men who’ve never experienced this before excited about this and wanting to see more of it?” she asked herself before a pitch meeting. Thankfully, Shi prevailed, and her film tackles adolescence in a fresh way: “It’s a side of teen girls that you never get to see,” she told the NYTimes. “We are just as awkward and sweaty and lusty and excited as any boy.”

The Pick of the Litter isn’t new, but I know dog-obsessed Anton will love it. The documentary follows a litter of Labrador puppies who spend two years training to become Guide Dogs for the Blind. Will they make it? We will see!

What movies are the kids in your life excited about these days? Please share below, I’d love to hear…

P.S. The best family movies according to Toby and Anton, and the best parenting advice I ever got.
