Why Choose the Camino Portugues to Santiago de Compostela?

[ad_1]

The Camino de Santiago is a network of ancient pilgrimage trails that connects several different countries and leads to the city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. One of the most popular routes is from Portugal and is called Camino Portugues or the Portuguese Way.

It’s more than just a scenic trail, it’s a physical challenge and a spiritual journey that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a curious traveler, embarking on the Camino Portugués promises an unforgettable journey.

Why the Camino Portugués and Not The Other Ones?

The most popular route is the French Way, but the Camino Portugues offer a unique alternative that none of the other routes can offer, and that’s the coastal walk. This route can be done in such a way that you can walk your way close to the coast, giving you unique and stunning views.

Not only that, this trail is a lot shorter bringing a lot of pilgrims that can’t complete the 35 days of walk from France in the French Way.

Historical Context

Like most of the routes, the Camino Portugues traces its roots back to the Middle Ages, when pilgrims from Portugal embarked on this sacred path to visit the tomb of Saint James. Nowadays people from all over the world travel to Portugal to do this route.

The route gained prominence due to its accessibility from the bustling city of Porto, making it an attractive choice for those seeking both pilgrimage and adventure.

Scenic Landscapes

While walking on these trails you’ll encounter a huge range of landscapes, from the rugged coastline of Portugal to the lush forest and mountains of Galicia, with amazing views along the way.

Not only that, you’ll be able to enjoy several ancient towns, seafood and meet unique local people.

The trail takes you through vineyards, quaint villages, and rolling hills!

Spiritual Connection

Whether you seek answers, gratitude, or inner peace, the Camino Portugués gives you a sacred space for reflection and renewal.

Like most of the routes, the Camino Portuguese is not just a physical journey, it’s a spiritual quest. For centuries, pilgrims from all over the world have found solace in the tranquility of ancient chapels, and the goodwill of other travelers and the local people.

Navigating the Trail

These trails have two starting points from Lisbon, which is 620 kilometers and takes up to 25 days, or from Porto which is 230 kilometers and 12 days. Like most of the Camino de Santiago routes, the trail splits into several different stages.

Nowadays there are a lot of people starting this journey from Tui in Spain, which is 116 kilometers long, meeting the minimum distance required to qualify for the Camino certificate. I highly recommend you don’t miss the portion of the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Tui, it’s a unique journey filled with adventure.

After you reach your next location, from Tui to Santiago is where you will meet most of the pilgrims and crowded places, that’s why I recommend starting from Porto, you’ll have more time for yourself.

Here are some useful information:

Waymarking and Signage

Look for the yellow arrows and scallop shells that guide you along the route. Trust the markers, and don’t hesitate to ask fellow pilgrims or locals for directions.

Albergues and Pilgrim Hostels

Albergues provide budget-friendly accommodations and a chance to connect with other travelers. But make sure you arrive early to secure a bed, as they operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
