Pebble Beach | $4.65 Million
A 1929 Spanish Revival house with five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and a guest apartment, on a 0.2-acre lot
The architect of this house, Hugh W. Comstock, worked extensively in the area in the 1920s and 1930s, designing a number of storybook cottages in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. This home has been updated several times since it was built, although many original details — including the roof’s adobe-style tiles — remain intact.
The property is close to a number of Pebble Beach’s golf courses: The Links at Spanish Bay is a five-minute drive; Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach Golf Links, widely considered one of the best public courses in the country, are about 10 minutes away. Driving into Monterey takes 15 minutes, and San Jose is about an hour and a half away.
Size: 3,510 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,325
Indoors: The entrance to the house is off the side of the driveway, and the front door opens into a foyer with hardwood floors.
To the immediate right is a spacious living-and-dining room with an original stone fireplace and a large window facing the backyard. Also off the foyer, behind a set of wrought-iron doors, is a family room with a stone floor, large skylights and access to the back patio.
An arched doorway leads into the kitchen, which has Spanish-tile floors, a Thermador range and a dining area with built-in shelves. A laundry room and a half bathroom are nearby.
There are two bedroom suites on the main level: One, off the kitchen, has built-in cabinetry and a black-and-white-tiled bathroom; the other functions as a primary suite, with a dressing area, a bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a walk-in shower, and access to the back patio.
The other three bedrooms are on the second floor, reached by stairs in the foyer. The largest, to the left of the stair landing, has an en suite bathroom, as does the bedroom next door. The third bedroom is at the end of the hall.
The guest apartment is reached from a hallway off the kitchen (with a lockable door) and has its own exterior entrance. It is set up as a studio apartment, with a kitchen and a full bathroom.
Outdoor space: The backyard includes a stone patio running alongside the house; a fire pit with space for chairs surrounding it; and a putting green.

Beverly Hills | $4.65 Million
A 1952 ranch house with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, on a 1.2-acre lot
This house is in the hills between the San Fernando Valley and Sunset Boulevard, about 10 minutes from Beverly Hills on one side and Sherman Oaks on the other. The neighborhood is quiet and private, with easy access to lookout points along Mulholland Drive and hiking trails in Franklin Canyon.
The studio complexes in Burbank, Studio City and Hollywood are all within a half-hour drive. The Getty Center museum complex and the Skirball Cultural Center are 15 minutes away, as is the main campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.
Size: 3,200 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,453
Indoors: From the street, a white gate opens to a wide driveway with a carport on one side.
The entrance to the house is a glass door at the end of a paved path that opens into a foyer with polished concrete floors and an adjacent powder room.
This space flows into a combined living and dining area that has an original stone fireplace with a raised hearth; high, beamed ceilings; expansive windows; and glass doors that open to the pool. There is space for a dining table between the sitting area and the kitchen, which has a center island that seats four and access to the backyard.
Also in this part of the house is a windowed alcove that could be a playroom or a home office. Nearby is a family room with pitched ceilings and wide-plank hardwood floors.
Up a short set of steps from the living room is a hallway that leads to the bedrooms. The primary suite is at the far end, with a walk-in closet; windows overlooking the hilly landscape; glass doors that open to a private patio with a hot tub; and a tranquil bathroom that includes a soaking tub, a separate glass shower and another glass door to the patio.
Next door is a sunny guest room that has its own bathroom. Two more bedrooms nearby share a full bathroom with a glass-walled shower.
Outdoor space: An outdoor dining area between the house and the pool is shaded by a roof overhang, and a sitting area nearby is shaded by a mature tree. One side of the pool is paved with red brick; the other is a wood deck with room for lounge chairs. The carport holds two cars, and there is room for more in the driveway.
