CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Christopher Bryan, vice president for finance and chief financial officer at City University of Seattle, has been named interim president. He replaces Randy C. Frisch, who was named interim president of National University.
Ericke S. Cage, vice president and chief of staff at West Virginia State University, has been named interim president. He replaces Nicole Pride, who stepped down at the end of July.
Nora Demleitner, a professor of law at Washington and Lee University, has been named president of St. John’s College, in Maryland.
Allison D. Garrett, president of Emporia State University, has been named chancellor and chief executive officer for the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.
Kathryn Heidemann, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art, has been named president. She will succeed Grafton J. Nunes, who plans to retire.
Jeremy Moreland, provost and chief academic officer at St. Thomas University, in Miami, has been named president of William Woods University, in Missouri. He will succeed Jahnae H. Barnett on October 1.
David Russell, interim president of Columbia College since January, has been named permanent president of the college in Missouri.
Kerri Schuiling, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Northern Michigan University, has been named interim president. She replaces Fritz Erickson, who was fired by the board of trustees.
Daniel K. Wims, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Alabama A&M University, has been named president. He will succeed Andrew Hugine Jr., who plans to retire at the end of December.
Departures
Fritz Erickson, president of Northern Michigan University since 2014, was fired on September 24.
Rick MacLennan, president of North Idaho College since 2016, has been fired by the board of trustees.
John Garvey, president of the Catholic University of America since 2010, plans to step down in June 2022.
Zach Messitte, president of Ripon College since 2012, plans to step down at the end of the fall-2021 semester.
Retirements
Mary Schmidt Campbell, president of Spelman College, plans to retire at the end of June.
Bill Katip, president of Grace College, in Indiana, plans to retire at the end of the academic year.
Pamela T. Luster, president of San Diego Mesa College since 2011, plans to retire on June 30, 2022.
Michael C. Maxey, president of Roanoke College since 2007, plans to retire at the end of the academic year.
Jose V. Sartarelli, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington since 2015, plans to retire on June 30, 2022.
Ronald A. Slepitza, president of Avila University since 2006, plans to retire on July 31.
Paul Trible, president of Christopher Newport University since 1996, plans to retire at the end of the 2021-22 academic year.

Jules Chametzky, a former professor of American literature at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, died on September 23. He was 93.
Burdett Loomis, a former professor at the University of Kansas, died on September 25. He was 76.
Teresa Miller, a professor at the University at Buffalo School of Law, died on August 6. She was 59.
Charles W. Mills, a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, died on September 20. He was 70.
Diana Natalicio, former president of the University of Texas at El Paso, died on September 24. She was 82. Natalicio was the first woman to serve as president of the university, which she lead from 1988 until 2019.
John L. Sanders, a former professor and director of the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, died on September 22. He was 94.
Charles Sellers, a professor emeritus of history at the University of California at Berkeley and author of The Market Revolution: Jacksonian America, 1815-1846 (1991), died on September 23. He was 98.
Claire Van Ummersen, former president of Cleveland State University, died on September 29. She was 86.
