Day Six: Find Some New Favorites

YOUR GOAL:
Try going vegan (that means plant-based and dairy-free) for one meal—or the whole the day.
Eating meatless may have gotten you curious about what it’s like to go vegan…wait, there’s a difference between the two? Yep. While the terms meatless and vegan may seem interchangeable, there’s actually a significant divide between these dietary choices. “A vegan lifestyle excludes all animal products, such as eggs, dairy, meat and even honey,” says Jerlyn Jones, R.D.N., L.D., owner of the Lifestyle Dietitian.
While the health benefits of veganism and vegetarianism are pretty much the same, following a vegan diet may be the most sustainable way to eat. So if you’ve decided to go meat-free for ethical reasons, you may want to try it. The key to keeping your commitment to eating vegan is to not feel deprived. If you’re a big fan of yogurt for breakfast, try coconut-milk yogurt as a nondairy yogurt option. Can’t imagine life without cheesy goodness? Try vegan cheese.
Giving up all animal-based products just too restrictive for you? Don’t feel guilty—you can still do a lot of good for the environment. Even being part-time vegan — whether it’s a couple of days or a couple of meals a week — can have a big impact.
