Hitachi ABB Power Grids Wins Order Worth Rs 124 Crore From Bharat Aluminum Company

The project will result in delivering power to the Korba aluminum smelter.

Technology leader Hitachi ABB Power Grids recently won a project worth more than Rs 124 crore from the Bharat Aluminum Company (BALCO) to provide an improved power distribution system at its Korba plant in Chhattisgarh. According to the order details, technology pioneer Hitachi ABB Power Grids will deliver fully engineered 400-kilovolt gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations. This will replace an existing apparatus to better assimilate the power from aluminum producer Bharat Aluminum Company’s captive generation plants. The replacement will result in delivering the power efficiently to the Korba aluminum smelter.

The company will equip the substations with its advanced MicroSCADA automation solution in order to monitor and control the aluminum producer’s grid in real-time and to ensure maximum power availability. Hitachi ABB will also deploy its industry-leading 500-megavolt ampere power transformers in order to enhance the grid efficiency and safety. According to a statement shared by the company, the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation will provide 60 per cent space-saving, compared to the conventional switchgear, due to its compact and its low-maintenance design. The technology of the fas insulated switchgear can be safely operated in confined spaces.

Additionally, the equipment for the power project will be manufactured in the country, in line with the government’s Make-in-India scheme. It is aimed at ensuring that the Korba plant’s complex smelting operations operate smoothly, helping Bharat Aluminum Company meet its production enhancement plan.  Hitachi ABB Power Grids is listed on the stock exchanges as ABB Power Products and Systems India Limited.
