Hyundai Completes 25 Years In India; Has Sold Over 9 Million Cars Since Inception

Hyundai is the 2nd largest car manufacturer in India and also the largest exporter PVs in the country
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is celebrating the completion of 25 years in the Indian market this year. The company, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company, was founded on May 6, 1996, at Irungattukkottai in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Currently, Hyundai is the second-largest car manufacturer in India and the largest exporter of passenger cars in the country. Since it’s inception, the company has sold over 9 million vehicles in the country, and as of 2020, Hyundai has exported over 3 million locally produced cars to about 88 countries, from India.

Hyundai India began its manufacturing operations in September 1998, at the Sriperumbudur plant which was the company’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside Korea. The first model to be launched by the company was the iconic tallboy hatchback, Hyundai Santro, which essentially cemented the company’s future in India. Later, the company also created the trend for premium hatchbacks with the Getz, which was later replaced by the i20.

The company’s compact SUV, Hyundai Creta, which was launched in 2015, is still one of its best-selling models in India, with an average sale of 12,000 to 13,000 units a month. In fact, in the 2020 calendar year, Hyundai became the top SUV brand in India with a total of 1,80,237 units being sold in the county, and this includes the Creta, Venue and the Tucson. In 2020, Hyundai also introduced the country’s first Intelligent Manual Transmission iMT with clutch-free function in the Venue subcompact SUV, and with its addition, now the company offers 6 transmission choices across all its model line-up.

Currently, Hyundai Motor India offers a total of 11 models in the country, right from the entry-level Santro hatchback, to the company’s flagship, the Hyundai Tucson. This includes the company’s fleet-only car the Xcent Prime. The company entire model range is priced starting from ₹ 4.67 lakh, going up to ₹ 27.33 lakh (all ex-showroom, Delhi).
