Helene D. Gayle, president and chief executive of the Chicago Community Trust, has been named as the finalist to be president of Spelman College.

Douglas A. Hicks, dean of the Oxford College of Emory University, has been named president of Davidson College, in North Carolina.

Tiffany E. Hunter, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Clark State College, has been named president of Paradise Valley Community College, in Arizona.

Brad Johnson, interim president of Southwest Baptist University, has been named president of College of the Ozarks, in Missouri.

Robert D. Kelley, vice president and special assistant to the president at Loyola University Maryland, has been named president of the University of Portland, in Oregon.

John Maduko, vice president for academic and student affairs at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, has been named president of Connecticut State Community College.

Mike Magee, founding chief executive of the K-12 education nonprofit Chiefs for Change, has been named president of Minerva University.

Stefanie D. Niles, vice president for enrollment and communications at Ohio Wesleyan University, has been named president of Cottey College, in Missouri. She will succeed Jann Weitzel, who plans to retire.

Darren Reisberg, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at the Joyce Foundation, has been named president of Hartwick College.

Robert H. Vela Jr., president of San Antonio College, has been named the sole finalist for president of Texas A&M University at Kingsville.

Resignations
Scott Dalrymple, president of Paul Smith’s College, stepped down to spend more time with family. The college’s provost, Nicholas Hunt-Bull, has been named interim president.

Harlan Sands, president of Cleveland State University, will step down due to “differences” with the Board of Trustees “regarding how the university should be led in the future.” Laura Bloomberg, the university’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, has been named the new president.

Retirements
Jerry Farley, president of Washburn University since 1997, plans to retire in September.

Doreen Larson, president of Edison State Community College since 2015, plans to retire by June 2023.

Mark P. Becker, former president of Georgia State University, has been named president of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.

DEATHS
Ursula Bellugi, a researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in San Diego, died on April 17. She was 91. Bellugi’s work focused on the biological foundations of language, specifically American Sign Language.

Thomas W. Cole Jr., founding president of Clark Atlanta University, died on April 14. He was 81. Cole served as president of West Virginia State University before becoming president of both Atlanta University and Clark College leading up to their consolidation.

Michael A. Olivas, a professor of law at the University of Houston for more than 30 years, died on April 22. He founded the university’s Institute of Higher Education Law and Governance and served as president of the Downtown Campus.

Martin Pope, a professor emeritus of chemistry at New York University, died on March 27. He was 103. Pope was also the founder and president of the board of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.
