Northwestern U. Names First Female President; 2021 Nobel Prize Winners Announced

Rebecca M. Blank will be the next president of Northwestern U.

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Bradley J. Andrews, president of Southwestern College, has been named president of Brevard College. He will succeed David Joyce, who plans to retire.

Rebecca M. Blank, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, has been named president of Northwestern University. She will be the first woman to serve as president of the university, and will succeed Morton O. Schapiro after he steps down next summer.

Tim Faltyn, president of Oklahoma Panhandle State University, has been named president of Murray State College, in Oklahoma. He will succeed Joy McDaniel, who plans to retire.

Kyle Farmbry, a professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers University at Newark, will become president of Guilford College on January 1.

Janell Oberlander, vice president at Gillette College of the Northern Wyoming Community College District, has been named interim president of the new Gillette Community College District, in Wyoming.

Andrea Young, vice president for finance and director of strategic initiatives at Ripon College, has been named interim president. She will succeed Zach Messitte, who will step down at the end of the semester.

Resignations
Glenn Cummings, president of the University of Southern Maine since 2015, plans to step down in June 2022.

Lisa Larson, president of Eastern Maine Community College, will step down to lead the Community College Growth Engine Fund Initiative at the Education Design Lab, in Washington, D.C.

Joel W. Martin, president of Wagner College since 2019, will resign at the end of the fall term. Angelo G. Araimo, senior vice president for advancement, enrollment, and planning, has been named interim president.

Mary Papazian, president of San Jose State University since 2016, plans to step down on December 21.

Mark S. Schlissel, president of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor since 2014, plans to step down in June 2023.

Charles Wight, president of Salisbury University since 2018, plans to step down at the end of June 2022.

Retirements
Danny Anderson, president of Trinity University, in Texas, plans to retire in May 2022.

Sister Janet Eisner, president of Emmanuel College, in Massachusetts, since 1979, plans to retire next year.

Jose V. Sartarelli, chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington since 2015, plans to retire in June.

Michael Büsges, senior adviser to the provost at Pennsylvania State University, has been named interim vice president for information technology and chief information officer. He succeeds Donald J. Welch, who left to become vice president for information technology and global university chief information officer at New York University.

Lenora Chapman, associate vice president for financial planning and budget at Sam Houston State University, has been named vice president for finance and administration at Southwestern University.

Kevin Honigford, chief financial officer at the Ivy Tech Foundation, has been named vice president and chief financial officer at Franklin College.

Eric Mayes, founding executive director of the Arkansas Academy for Educational Equity at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, has been named vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Lawrence University.

Thomas J. Christensen, a professor of international relations at Columbia University, will become interim dean of the School of International and Public Affairs on January 1, after Merit Janow steps down.

Lawrence M. Drake II, president and chief executive of the LEAD Program, has been named dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Bethune-Cookman University.

Gretchen Givens Generett, interim dean of the School of Education at Duquesne University, has been named to the post permanently.

Sara Fletcher Harding, interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Florida Southern College, has been named to the post permanently.

Dianne Harris, a senior program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, has been named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington.

Yan He, an information-literacy librarian at Indiana University at Kokomo, has been named dean of the library.

Marla Love, interim dean of students at Cornell University since September 2020, has been named to the post permanently.

Debbie G. Thomas, vice chancellor for learning and instruction at Arkansas State University Mid-South, has been named dean of the College of Education at Grambling State University.

Resignations
Steve Coll, dean of the journalism school at Columbia University, plans to step down and return to the faculty.

Paul Kirgis, dean of the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana at Missoula, plans to step down and return to the faculty. This followed allegations that he had discouraged students from reporting sexual assaults to the university’s Title IX office.

Lawrence J. Marnett, dean of the School of Medicine Basic Sciences at Vanderbilt University since 2016, plans to step down on June 30.

Trevor Morrison, dean of New York University’s School of Law, plans to step down at the end of the academic year.

Retirements
Twyla Cummings, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School at the Rochester Institute of Technology, will retire on June 30.

Christopher (Kit) Spicer, dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at Western Washington University since July 2013, will retire in March 2022.

NOBEL PRIZES
Joshua D. Angrist, a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Guido W. Imbens, a professor of economics at Stanford University, were jointly awarded half of the 2021 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for their “methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships,” along with David Card, a professor of economics at the University of California at Berkeley, who received half of the prize for “his empirical contributions to labor economics.”

David Julius, a professor of physiology at the University of California at San Francisco, and Ardem Patapoutian, a professor of neuroscience at Scripps Research, were jointly awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for “their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”

Benjamin List, a professor at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, in Germany, and David W.C. MacMillan, a professor of chemistry at Princeton University, were jointly awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.”

Syukuro Manabe, a senior meteorologist in the Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Princeton University, and Klaus Hasselmann, a former director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, in Germany, were jointly awarded half of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for “the physical modeling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming,” along with Giorgio Parisi, a professor of theoretical physics at the Sapienza University of Rome, who received half of the prize for “the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”

Shelly C. Lowe, a member of the National Council on the Humanities and executive director of the Native American Program at Harvard University, has been nominated as chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

DEATHS
Peter C. Bunnell, a professor emeritus of the history of photography and modern art at Princeton University, died on September 20. He was 83.

Eric Cassell, a clinical professor emeritus of public health at the Weill Cornell Medical College, died on September 24. He was 93.

Myriam P. Sarachik, a professor emerita of physics at City College of the City University of New York, died on October 7. She was 88.

Martin J. Sherwin, a professor of history at George Mason University, died on October 6. He was 84. Sherwin won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in biography with his co-author, Kai Bird, for American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Rabbi Moshe Tendler, a former instructor and assistant dean of student affairs at Yeshiva University, died on September 28. He was 95.
