Tata Motors is currently readying its all-new micro SUV, which is codenamed as HBX concept. The small SUV was showcased last year at the Auto Expo. The Indian carmaker has been testing the SUV for quite some time now. This time around carandbike has managed to capture the SUV on camera while undergoing a road test in Panchgani, Maharashtra. As in the exclusive images, the test mule can be seen heavily draped in camouflage along with pseudo cladding. The prototype is fitted with production-ready dual-tone alloy wheels, something we have already seen in previous spy pictures.

The new HBX will come with split headlamps, with the main unit positioned below the independently placed indicators/DRLs.

Giving a closer look at the test mule, we can say that the HBX is nearing the production stage. The small Tata SUV could be launched in the country sometime this year. Also, the company has already trademarked the name ‘Timero’ in India, which could be the official name of the production-spec HBX. The upcoming Tata SUV will employ the Impact Design 2.0 philosophy and will be based on the same ALFA platform that also underpins the Altroz premium hatchback. Once launched, it will compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and the Renault Kwid.

The design of the SUV will be inline with the newly launched Safari and its younger sibling, Harrier. The SUV is expected to get the same split-style headlamp with LED DRLs and the brand’s new signature tri-arrow design mesh grille. It is expected to get electrically adjustable ORVMs with integrated side indicators, circular fog lamps, alloy wheels, roof rails, roof-integrated spoiler, raked rear windscreen, and more. The homegrown automaker has already confirmed that the production version of the HBX will retain around 90 per cent of its styling elements from the concept.

We don’t get to see the cabin of the HBX in these photos. Based on previous spy shots, the SUV is likely to sport an all-black interior with contoured seats featuring contrast stitching. It is likely to feature flat-bottom steering with mounted controls, a large instrument cluster, start/stop button, and more.

Mechanically, the small HBX SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol motor. It is the same motor that also powers the Altroz hatchback. The mill is capable of producing 85 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque. We might get to see a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and an optional 5-speed AMT unit.
