Yankees reliever Zack Britton is expected to return to New York on Wednesday and undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from his left elbow in the coming days, the team announced Tuesday.

Britton had received an MRI on his left elbow after experiencing soreness after a bullpen session, manager Aaron Boone said earlier Tuesday.

Britton is expected to miss roughly three-to-four months, reports SNY’s Andy Martino.

“He threw a bullpen a couple of days ago. Everything went well with the bullpen but he had some soreness after it, so we put him through some tests,” Boone told reporters via Zoom Tuesday morning.

Boone added that Britton having COVID-19 within the last couple of months set him back when it came to preparing for the 2020 season.

“After his bullpen the other day, which was successful and he didn’t feel anything, it was after the fact,” Boone said “. … Sunday evening he started to feel something, so we just wanted to make sure we get some pictures of it.”

The Yankees exercised an option in Britton’s contract during the offseason that will keep him in the Bronx through the 2022 season.

He will earn $13 million this season and $14 million in 2022.
