Mar. 13—OXFORD — J.F. Webb endured another rough outing in their first year under head coach Lamont Richardson, as Louisburg dominated them through all four quarters to obtain a 48-14 victory on Friday evening.
Head coach Lamont Robinson anticipated that his first season would be a difficult one due to the circumstances that hindered their offseason program, but he is optimistic that a victory is still a feasible goal for J.F. Webb after displaying flashes of efficiency against Louisburg.
“We’re young, and it’s tough trying to put a team together during a pandemic,” Robinson said. “I’m learning a lot through this, but the boys showed some fight towards the end and I’m proud of that. Now we have to go back and hit the drawing board.”
Louisburg had no issues navigating their way through a stagnant J.F. Webb defense on their opening drive, but they end up having to punt the ball away after an ineligible receiver downfield negated a big play that would have put them in the redzone.
J.F. Webb attempted to capitalize on Louisburg’s missed opportunity, but an interception from quarterback Javon Bullock at midfield gave the ball back to their opponent. On fourth down, senior quarterback Ja’Heim Brown connected with senior wide receiver Turan Alston on a deep throw to give Louisburg an 8-0 lead.
After failing to recover an onside kick, J.F. Webb was powerless to stop Louisburg’s rushing attack and once again gave up a touchdown on another fourth down in the redzone. Brown would find Alston once again on a catch-and-run to begin the second quarter, giving Louisburg a 21-0 advantage.
Bullock got the offense in great field position on a big 30-yard run, but a botched snap gave the ball back to Louisburg at midfield. Junior Jaheim Heartsfield made up for the mistake by intercepting Brown and returning the ball into the endzone for J.F. Webb’s first touchdown of the game.
Despite this, J.F. Webb’s defense yielded another score after failing to stop the chemistry between Brown and Alston. Mistakes began to pile up for the J.F. Webb offense, which surrendered two fumbles on the first play of two consecutive possessions.
In a play that proved to be a microcosm of J.F. Webb’s first half, Bullock mishandled a snap at midfield, but managed to hold on to the ball and escape numerous defenders for a crucial J.F. Webb touchdown, only to witness the play get called back due to an illegal block in the back penalty.
Brown scored Louisburg’s final first half touchdown on the ground to give his team a 35-7 halftime lead. Following another J.F. Webb fumble on their first second half possession, Louisburg took the air out of the ball and added two more touchdowns on the ground to cap off their stellar evening.
Robinson said the main goal for J.F. Webb right now is to build up the physical strength of his players and focus on making small, but gradual improvements on both sides of the ball so that his players can remain competitive through their final four games.
“We have to reduce turnovers,” Robinson said. “This is the second game in a row where we’ve had over four turnovers in the first half and you can’t win games like that. That’s on me as the head coach, so we need to work on protecting the football in practice.
J.F. Webb will try to bounce back and get their first win on the 2020-21 season next week when they hit the road to face Bunn at 6:30 p.m.
