Wetzel scores 1,000th point in Spartans’ win

Feb. 21—FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Joining her father Rich and her aunt Amy, Mya Wetzel climbed onto North Schuylkill’s list of 1,000-point career scorers Saturday in the Spartans’ 64-50 win over Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League Division I girls’ basketball game.

Wetzel scored her milestone point during the first half and finished with 23 points as the Spartans built a 48-24 halftime lead. Kamryn Mengel added 13 points for the winners.

With the victory, North Schuylkill tied Jim Thorpe for the Division I lead at 13-1. The teams split their meetings, but North Schuylkill will have the division’s top seed for this week’s Schuylkill League semifinals with a .712 District 11 power rating to the Olympians’ .691. Jim Thorpe has the division’s wild card for the semifinals.

Tamaqua was paced by three double-figure scorers. McKenna Meckes tallied 14 points, Sophia Boyle scored 12 and Serena Jones added 10.
