Smith College Names New President; Business School Deans at Temple and Villanova U. Will Step Down

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Marco Clark, executive director of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward’s University, has been named president of Holy Cross College at Notre Dame.
David Emmanuel Goatley, associate dean of academic and vocational formation at Duke University’s Divinity School, has been named president of Fuller Theological Seminary. He will succeed Mark Labberton and will be the first Black president of the school.
Brad Hall, tribal-college and high-school outreach specialist at the University of Montana at Missoula, has been named president of Blackfeet Community College.
Geordie Hyland, an executive vice president at Ultimate Medical Academy, in Florida, has been named president and chief executive of the American College of Education.
Charles L. Karr, interim president of the University of Alabama at Huntsville, has been named to the post permanently. He became interim president in November 2021 when Darren Dawson retired.
Ray Rodrigues, director of interagency partnerships at Florida Gulf Coast University and a Florida state senator, has been named chancellor of the State University System of Florida. He will succeed Marshall Criser.
André Stephens, vice president for student development at Biola University, has been named president of Fresno Pacific University. He succeeds Joseph Jones, who is retiring.
Sarah Willie-LeBreton, provost and dean of the faculty at Swarthmore College, has been named president of Smith College.
Resignations
Adenuga Atewologun, president of Riverland Community College, in Minnesota, will step down on June 30, 2023.
Robert A. Brown, president of Boston University since 2005, plans to step down next year.
David Finegold, president of Chatham University, in Pennsylvania, plans to step down at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
Christopher Gibson, president since 2020 of Siena College, in New York, will step down at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
Retirements
Rebecca Johnson, interim president of Oregon State University, will retire this month.
Cynthia Warrick, the first female president of Stillman College, plans to retire on June 30, 2023.

Antoinette A. Coleman, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University System of Maryland, has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the City University of New York Medgar Evers College.
Gloria Oikelome, vice president for academic affairs at Montgomery County Community College, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Delaware Valley University.
Jeffrey Robinson, a professor of management and global business at Rutgers Business School, has been named provost and executive vice chancellor at Rutgers University at Newark.

Resignations
Nate Nickerson, vice president for communications at Yale University, will leave to serve as communications and public-affairs partner at the Palo Alto-based venture-capital firm DCVC. Karen Peart, director of university media relations at the university, will become interim vice president.
Retirements
Joanne DeStefano, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Cornell University, will retire in June 2023.

Charlie Morse, associate dean and director of counseling in the Student Development and Counseling Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has been named the institution’s first dean of student wellness.
Linda Nagel, a professor and head of the department of forest and rangeland stewardship at Colorado State University, has been named dean of the S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources at Utah State University.
Karl Puljak, director of the School of Design at Louisiana Tech University, has been named dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Resignations
Ronald Anderson, dean of the Fox School of Business and School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University, will step down and return to the faculty in June 2023.
Mario Enzler, dean of the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas, resigned after allegations that he had falsified his educational credentials.
Joyce E.A. Russell, dean of the School of Business at Villanova University, plans to step down at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.

DEATHS
J. Myron Atkin, a former dean and professor emeritus at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, died on August 18. He was 95. Atkin served as dean from 1979 to 1986 and remained on the faculty until his retirement in 2004.
James L. Fisher, former president of what is now Towson University, died on September 7. He was 91.
Kurt Gottfried, a professor emeritus of physics at Cornell University, died on August 25. He was 93. Gottfried co-founded the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1969 with Henry Way Kendall.
Gwendolyn Midlo Hall, a professor emerita of history at Rutgers University, died on August 29. She was 93. Hall’s work focused on slavery in the Caribbean, including her 1992 book Africans in Colonial Louisiana: The Development of Afro-Creole Culture in the Eighteenth Century.
Paul T. Kwami, director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers at Fisk University, died on September 10. He was 70.
Kenneth W. Starr, a former president of Baylor University who is known for his role in Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, died on September 13. He was 76. Starr also served as dean of the Caruso School of Law at Pepperdine University.
Byron L. Warnken, a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law for more than four decades, died on September 5. He was 76.
